tailight problems (plastic chipping)

Hello, recently ive been finding small red plastic pieces on my driveway and i figured they must be from some workers car (dads a contractor), but i took a look around my car and what i noticed was that its from the back tailights of my mini. The light has chipped on the inside (the red piece)...the chips are missing from exact same places on both lights. Theres one chip at the top and one near the bottom...ive never seen this happen...my only guess is that its been cold here latley and that the plastic is cold in the morning and the bulb heats up the plastic to quickly which leads to a small fracture...anyone else experience anything like this? Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

These from the upper light or your lower side ones? Pics? This seems like a new thing to me.

this isnt my picture, but kinda the same thing except my tailight doesnt have the reverse part...anyway there are two chips missing from the red part near the chrome on the right side....about 2 inches from the top and then the other chip is on the same side but two inches from the bottom...so when your looking at the light the chips are to the right near the chrome, one is two inches from the top one is two inches from the bottom...the same goes for the right light, but instead of being on the right they are on the left; one two inches from the top, one two inches from the bottom...this is the best i can describe it without exact pics..

This tread moved to 2nd generation MINIs > Stock problems/Issues

Maybe mention it to your Service Advisor? Any Technical service Bulletin on this problem?

Oops,

Sorry didn't know you are first generation (seems obvious now) but for early MINIs I don't know of many that have your problem with the taillights.

Funny that both side lights are affected. Rules out an accident as source.
