passenger side motor mount

Recently took in my 05 MCS for the scheduled maintenance. The service advisor said that the passenger side motor mount was leaking fluid and that this was common problem. The advsior said that the dealer replaced about 35 mounts in the last month. Any one else experience this issue? Is this a technical service bulletin? The dealership replaced it for free since it was under warranty, but this was the first car that I owned that had a motor mount go bad before 100k miles.

Just took my '05 in for this on Thursday. I noticed fluid on my garage floor and eventually experienced a knocking sound whenever I'd shift or tip-in on the accelerator.

I've been reading this board for a while & yes it appears to be a fairly common problem. It only effects the 2005-2006 MINI's. The earlier cars used a different mount.

Actually, my 03 MCS suffered the same problem (i.e., passenger side engine mount failure). There was a discussion as to whether the old mounts, which looked different, were oil-filled or not. First hand experience, I can tell you that they ARE! Even the service advisers told me that they were not and the oil must have been coming from somewhere else... Not true.

05-06 mounts tend to fail quite easily, whereas the older ones seem to require some force (e.g., mine surfaced after a clutch replacement; can you say "dealer-initiated-problem"?).

Same boat here... walked out to the garage yesterday and noticed an oil puddle under the passenger side area of the engine. I immediately popped the hood and saw oil under the motor mount. I can't remember if it was a thread here or at a local garage day where I saw one leaking as an example.

Going to make an appointment tomorrow to bring it in to be replaced. Shouldn't be a big deal from what I hear. I have an early '05 MCC (w/29kmiles).

My 2005 S Cabrio JCW had the same problem. Found the puddle toward the right side of where the car is usually parked three days ago.
Mini of Murray says they also found a coolant leak at the same time, but everything fixed.

This problem happens to the earlier MINIs around 60-80k miles, but the '05 and '06 models usually die around the 20k mark... 40k if you drive it very gently.

2004 build date 04's have the same mount as 05-06.

Mine was replaced once under warranty.

Now that I'm out of warranty and past two years since it was replaced, I'm in the middle of replacing it as I type.

That E12 torx bolt is a PITA! I stripped the damn thing and had to cut it off (finally).

Btw when I removed the upper bracket, I was able to jiggle the center post of the motor mount freely with almost no force.

The replacement one did not budge by hand. Edit: after installing it it does budge a little bit when rocking the engine.

Part # 22116778610 which I got for $70 shipped from Morristown MINI.

I have to pick up a new bolt tomorrow.

04 MCS, 37,000 miles and I just had mine replaced last week. I've still got black gunk all over the underside of my hood. I also had both window motors replaced. I really wish stuff would stop breaking on this car. I've only got about 6 months left on warranty and I'm starting to get nervous.

To the guy who replaced the mount himself: how much did the replacement part cost?

Does this problem happen very often on the R50 (base model)?

I wouldn't worry about it. You'll have oil leak out of the damper until its empty. I was told that there is a rubber piece inside the metal housing that sits with the oil. You should be fine for a quick trip to the dealer.

Uh oh...I'm noticing that "golf ball in the glove box" sound and a stain similar to snappers'. I've been seeing little quarter-sized puddles as well...

How long can I run on it this way without causing further problems? I'm traveling all week and then plan to participate in a group event (highways and twisties, no auto-x or track). Probably 600 planned miles before a window to get it fixed. Plus, nearest dealer is 160 miles away.

I think it must have been going slowly for some time, so I can't imagine anything catastrophic happening within a couple of weeks...

Is there any aftermarket part to replace this with that's not fluid filled or at least doesn't fail quite as easily? I figure while under warranty it's not such a problem but once out of warranty if this fails I only want to have to deal with it once.

You could try what this member did. Maybe your dealer will overnight you the part.

Just looked, and my 05mcs has fluid in that area. Is there more than one fliud filled motor mount? Is the warranty fix something better or just replacing it with the same questionable part?
thanks.
