I had the same problem removing the wheel speed sensor. One came out fine, the other (driver's side) was stuck. After trying to twist/pry it out, the top of the sensor sheared off. I did not want to tap it down into the wheel bearing hub because of the associated work involved removing that so I drilled a pilot hole into the sensor, screwed a wood screw into the sensor, shot some PB onto the sensor (wait), and then used a hammer to pry it out like a nail. Worked like a charm.

I have had the same problem. Went to the local BMW dealer and they told me wich one to replace. The problem is still there, I hate cars that don't work...
Are there anyone here who know if the ABS sensor is the same on a 2001 and a 2002?

So I understand that the ABS, DSC, TMPS trifecta is most likely the wheel speed sensor. However, I was wondering if DSC = ASC ? As the manual says they are different things. Would the fix still be the same (Clean the sensor) or does ASC mean I need a new module ?

I've never seen cleaning the sensor fix any ABS issue, that would only work if a piece of metal was stuck to the tip of the sensor.

DSC and ASC are only different in that DSC has more sensors and operation. But the ABS part of the car is the same either way.

If you have an ABS, and or DSC/ASC light on you need to have someone with a computer that can read those codes check it out and diagnosis from there.

Ok, had same prob getting old one out, screw method with pry bar did trick. But now how do I get the new one in? Will a petroleum based lube do the trick?

Got old one out and new one in. Seemed to work fine this weekend but started intermittently pulsing when apply different degrees of braking pressure. Also at different speeds.

Any thoughts on what the problem may be - faulty sensor?

No fault lights are tripping...

I have this same problem on my wife's mini. The stealership wants $400 to change it...

I have the part on order. My question is how safe is it for my wife to continue to drive with the faulty sensor?

There's nothing inherently unsafe, as long as she realizes that ABS and Stability Control won't work until the wheel speed sensor is fixed.

My passenger side sensor was frayed from rubbing the harmonic balancer. I bought a new one on eBay for $15. It didn't seem to fix the issue so I repaired the frayed sensor by soldering a new wire in. Now the light stay off for a few days and then on again....back and forth. For now they are keeping the airbag light company. I'll get it resolved one of these weekends.
