I'm Done! GOOD BYE!

I'm 61. I drive very condervatively. I couldn't wait to have my 2003 Cooper with the Steptronic Transmission. I traded the piece of junk in yesterday after the dealer told me that the transmission needed replacement (out of warranty of course).
Unbelievable. Vour years old and $6,000 + for a new transmission? Huh? I drove a Ford pickup for 15 years and the transmission never failed. What the heck?! I'm happy with what the dealer gave me for it though.
Well, this is my first and last post. I wish you all the very best of luck.

P.S. You should see my new Saturn Vue. What a peach!

Well thanks for posting your farewell of your 1st gen MINI in the 2nd gen forum.

Sorry you feel so bad about the tranny issue and apparently it left you with a bad taste in your mouth. Was that the only issue you had? Because while sad, if that was it, it doesn't seem like it really was a piece, just a bad tranny that unfortunately was out of warranty. The steptronic is a bit more sophisticated that your old Ford tranny, and I am sure there are many Ford pickup drivers that have been through multiple trannies, in the time you stayed on your single tranny.

Well Jerry, I hear you & I completely understand. I love my MINI, but a $6,000 out of warranty repair would have me swearing at, then swearing off MINI's. Good luck with the Vue.

Why is his post lame??

I bet you'd be pretty upset if that had happened to you. I know I would, but then again I'm a memeber of the LAME motoring club.

Yep the new R56 is pretty peachy. They got rid of that junky CVT tranny & replaced it with a conventional torque converter automatic.

Actually, I think he has a good point. Certain things you don't expect to fail that soon. Many have been burned by this kinda stuff, most has been handled under warranty, but who's to say what would happen post-warranty??? I would not be pleased.

agreed...i think its a very reasonable post. Some may be lucky enough to have received the later model trannies....but for those of us who own the 02 and 03 MC's (manual and CVT), we are faced with the dreaded fear that our trannies will implode prematurely but the large repair cost will come out of our pockets.

Well .02 or not. I don't see a problem with his post. He's pissed & IMO he has every right to be.

It's hard to say welcome when he's saying good bye.

Welcome to NAM JerryR, sorry we never got a chance to know you.

What does the comment..."I wonder if he has kids"... mean?

I would be upset, too, about the failure of the tranny, but it would have been better if Jerry had joined the site sooner, asked for help and suggestions, rather than come on in anger. Folks who have had issues with their earlier CVTs may have had suggestions for him. I wish him luck and hope he enjoys his Vue.

Through four years of Happy Motoring, he couldn't find his way on here just once.

The tranny goes out, he decides he's done with MINIs, and he suddenly feels he has something to share with us.

Boy, I'm really going to miss that guy.

You'd be surprised...

there are many expensive sub-systems on the Mini that go long before they should. Enough to be noteworthy, maybe to the risk adverse even wary, but none of them would keep me away from a good Mini with any combo of options....

But surely I'd be pissed if I owned one where something pricey went after the warranty, but not after a long life... We all expect the engine and the tranny to last well over 100k if not thrashed and well maintained. Maybe one clutch in there....

But the Midlands isn't the strongest, and a few CVT belts have popped. A bunch of flywheels/clutches as well. The 6 speed seems pretty good, as do both the cooper and S long blocks, but a few superchargers have spun thier lube as well.

Any of these goes, and you're lucky if it's just the SC, and you could be looking at a very hefty bill!

Matt

You all are being too harsh.

The OP had a serious problem. It sounds like he's telling you all about it. Its educational. It provides input on MINI problems. And you guys bash him for sharing??? Whats wrong with that picture You only want to hear about how they walk on water and how wonderful they are and not problems?

Just hope YOU dont get a $6K bill and decide to share it and find unsympathetic responses.

Cut the guy a break. No sympathy for the OP

There's another thread where the OP is getting reamed..

for not liking a bunch going south in the first week. We're falling into the tradition of shooting the messanger, as opposed to listening to the message.

It's what makes America the great country it is!
