I'm Done! GOOD BYE!
Chows, I think you're missing the point. Maybe because you're on the opposite side of the spectrum and you seem to ENJOY some good ol' fashioned MINI bashing.
Anyway... I read lots of posts on this board from people who are complaining about things they don't like about their MINIs. I learn from some of them. Some of them, I just ignore as it's useless whining about small stuff. But I don't question the comments. This is different.
But the difference here is, the thread starter has not a single post under his belt. He's had his MINI for 4 years... it couldn't have been too bad, or he would have gotten rid of it long ago. Suddenly, he has a problem, albeit a large one, and now he feels it's the right time to join our community.
Well...tough break for him and it sucks that every once and a while a MINI develops a major problem. But I know of no make of automobile that doesn't. So it's hardly newsworthy to come on a board, make a post like that, then announce you're never coming back.
So if some of us cop an attitude, I think it's warranted (pun intended).

+1 Matt
So he's sharing now. Its a data point. Most of us know the midland trannies have problems. Granted if he had read NAM before, he might know that. But I see no point in treating the OP poorly. Whats the point of sarcastic remarks? What does it serve and to what end? How about just common courtesy? Or is society too callous that since he aint one of the good ole (gentlemen/gentleladies) here then there is no point in a sympathetic response? I dont get that.
But whatever, he'll probably never be back and not care anyway but I view it as another data point.
I dont enjoy MINI bashing, I dont like their unreliability that I have seen and find myself defending MINIs elsewhere because they are a fun car but that is not the point.

I deal with people with attitudes all day long in my job. I'm paid to be nice to them regardless of how rude they are, how ignorant they are of the traffic codes, etc, etc.
I don't get paid to listen to someone come on here and proudly announce, "this is my first and last post". Well, welcome and goodbye ! Like I said, if he had been a part of our community and come on here bashing the car and his problem, those of us who commented negatively wouldn't have thought twice about it. But FOUR years and he couldn't find his way here ? And now he has something to tell us ?
Seems a bit flippant and self-serving, to me. I doubt he was trying to contribute a data point for the good of the community.
But hey, now that you mention it, I'm done wasting my time on this thread.
6k is an aweful lot of money...to fix anything. I know I'd be...well, not my best... if I had to hand over six grand for a repair. I could imagine that I'd handle it alot worse than the OP...
Evangelism
Who would have thought MINI owners would be so mean-spirited
The OP has a very valid point, whether he posted on NAM before or not.
After almost 4 years and no major issues, I am getting tired of all the minor, niggling things I have to worry about.
I am seriously contemplating selling my MINI as well.
This is not something I take lightly...I drooled and saved for three years until i could afford the 04 MINI, and i have modded and coddled it like a baby.
On second thoughts, I REALLY LIKE MY MINI!!! AAAARRGH

Mean spirits run all too rampant in this country. I try to teach my students to welcome dissenting viewpoints, and try to understand others' perspectives. I strive for this also in my daily life. And, I am not always successful
As MINI owners, why can't we try to be as wonderful as our little vehicles?
I remember all too well a good friend of mine who posted her woes with her MINI S on NAM a couple years or so ago. She was aghast at the spew of "orneriness" that came about from "another viewpoint" that wasn't Gung Ho MINI. Her experience sure stilled my voice until I got Tawanda, even though I lurked for a couple years.
Also, not everyone is facile and eloquent in the English language. But, I do believe the OP has a real point. I would be mighty upset if I had to pay $6,000 for a transmission on a 4 year old modern vehicle.
Wow. I still ADORE my MINI. And, I TRUST my Honda

I vote that we strive for a respectful face on NAM. Peace, peeps.

I think I might be trading mine in as well...
Further investigation with MiniUSA and other mechanics has me quite worried about the reliability of long term ownership of a Mini. From the once a year oil changes resulting in pre-mature engine failure, manual transmission failures (for the same reason), the poor service at MNS and the repairs I've already had in my cars short 19,000 mile, 2.5 year life (power steering pump and rear main seal) conmbined with the most recent repairs of the sun roof slides and guides being replaced, the plastic air intake connectors that attach to the top of the radiator are busted, and now the bent strut and collapsed control arm bushing that Mini insists is not a design flaw. Heck, they didn't even reset my oil change interval indicator, they lost a mounting bolt to my Ferrari horn, their car wash is causing the bonnet stripes (they installed) to peel off, they have no shuttle service and expect you to pay $10 a day for a crappy rental car any time your car is in repair, warranty or not...I could go on.
Clearly the suspension is perfect for track driving, and unforgiving on public roads that it could cause such a catastrophic failure.
This car is starting to remind me of a very beautiful woman I once dated who cost me a lot of money to maintain.
To be honest, without any choices for service other than MNS, I have to consider trading it in on something with more service options and better build quality.
I am so depressed right now. I just don't know what the next few years are going to cost me if I keep the car after the warranty runs out in six months... and that has me frightened. The car is a blast to drive, but I shouldn't have so many repairs on such a new car with such little mileage and be forced to deal with an incompetant service department because there is no competition and therefore no incentive for them to do better work or offer better customer service. My confidence in the quality of the car and the dealer has been completely shattered.
Help me out here. Give me some reasons why I should keep this car. Right now, aside from missing some great friends in this club, I can't think of any.

We were not the first to shoot
"We're falling into the tradition of shooting the messanger, as opposed to listening to the message.
It's what makes America the great country it is!"
Long history of shooting the messenger before we started here in the USA and I have to say that it is another thing we are not the best at doing but we can improve.

Hey! I hear the message, then shoot! But, yeah, there is a tendency to jump on some-one who condemns our beloved vehicle. It's kind of like hearing a bad song from a group we love. If we didn't know who did it, we would be ranting up a storm about how bad it was. But, when we do know, then we make allowances and excuses.
Whoa, TMI!I am far from a MINI apologist, many of my recent posts would support this claim. I recognize it is not a perfect car, nor is it for everyone. And while I love my MINI, I can't guarantee my next car will be a MINI. That being said, the OP did reek of an attempt to flame.
What useful information or insight did he provide? All he did was complain about his bad transmission and then go on about how much better his old Ford F-150 was. He said goodbye but did he ever really say hello? I don't mind if someone comes on here to share their experience and then stays around to discuss it but as far as I can tell the only point of his post was to let off some steam.
All cars have problems. The most unreliable car I ever owned was a 1995 Honda Accord. I could get angry and say that I will never buy one again, but I understand that sometimes you just get a bad apple. Our family has owned 6 Volvos and the latest was a 2000 S80. My Dad had to replace the transmission after 4 years but it was the only time we've had a transmission problem with any of them (the S80 now has over 200k miles and is running strong). It wouldn't stop him from buying another Volvo. Again, I have no problem with someone venting frustration with their MINI, but at least stick around and engage in a productive discussion so that someone else might benefit from your misfortunes.
