It shouldn't be much of a problem. The parts issue is just because different options require a different part number. I think it's the automatic wipers option that does it.

Mrs Dori is in the shop as we speek for the SZL failure. I actually almost crashed b/c 2 weeks ago the windshield wiper water sensor just stopped all of a sudden and I was doing 50 on the highway and it was storming and i couldn't see where I was going. Had to turn it off then back on really quick. eeek. She's been in there for a week now and hopefully i'll get her back sometime next week.

I hadn't heard of the wiper sensor being part of the SZL quartet. Is that what the code read?

Well I got Dori back yesterday evening and The popping noise was still present. On the drive to work today the DSC light and brake light came on again and I was like wth (in nicer terms). Well when I look at my service sheet it says problem wasn't able to be duplicated and customer may have experienced dsc activation when driving on rough or gravel roads. I was beyond ticked. Now I have to bring my car back in and leave it for another week even after I told them it was a defective SZL sensor. I am going to be doing some major bit**ing tomorrow!!

I just completed a computerized "customer satisfaction" survey, and vented a little. Maybe you'll get one, too.

Different SZL Symptoms

Just had the SZL replaced in my MC yesterday - my symptoms were totally different from everyone else on this thread (ie. my wipers, turn signals, tach, etc. were all fine) so I though I'd post as an FYI to folks experiencing my symptoms.

My problem was with the MFSW - the buttons would only work intermittenly. The volume/skip controls would only work randomly and the cruise control would either not come on, or turn off right away. One other symptom - at night with the headlights on the buttons on the steering wheel would flicker on and off randomly.

Replacing the SZL (after a month wait, and an extra visit when they ordered the wrong version) fixed my issues.

On the same note, I had my SZL sensor replaced for the usual reasons, alarm lights etc. Now my NAV voice command works. They said that they couldnt find anything wrong with the NAV. So there must be some connection with the two systems.

That's weird--we've all had the usual quartet of symptoms, and now you two come up with something new! Glad it's fixed, anyway...

Hardcharger--keep an eye on the cruise control. That IS a known problem, and not connected with the SZL (as far as I know). There is a software fix for it, although it might have been already incorporated in your overall reprogramming.

Thanks - the invoice does mention reprogramming, so hopefully I'll avoid that one.

Cruise control?

What are the known cruise issues? Have the new built mini's remedied the SZL issue?

The cruise control would "drop out" during use on the highway. Sometimes it was just once in a while; other times frequently. It was on the early cars only.

I have *heard* that the replacement SZL has been redesigned. I read somewhere that the problem was that the offglassing plastics fogged the "window." I haven't a clue if this is correct.

theory

Was that maybe outgassing of the plastics? That would make sense to me. I do not know what off gassing is. As an engineer I hear all sorts of different things come up.

What it sounds like is happening is they have a window to check steering angle and the window on the sensor is sealed to the outside world. The plastic being just recently molded is outgassing some of its residual chemicals that do not solidify in the molding process (could also be mold release agent) and this was slowly clouding the window causing the signal to degrade and then set the code.

**steps off soap box**

It's the same thing--I've always heard it referred to as "off gassing." A regional thing?

(Merriam-Webster dictionary shows similar meanings.)

I have the same problem. I need to take a trip before the dealership can get it fixed. Has this problem left anyone on the side of the road?

an engineering thing

In my company and in my schooling (engineering) we called it outgassing. Mostly referring to fluids outgassing a different soluble gas out of solution.

Norton 828--not that I know of. The "brake" light is just a panel idiot light, the windshield wipers behave once the engine is on, the turn signal noncancelling issue is just a PITA, and having DSC out is just like having no DSC option. Might affect you if you corner too fast or skid during rain, etc., but that's it.

Can't speak about the nav issues since I don't have that option.

Hey All,

The service center in Korea is telling me they have an updated/upgraded SZL sensor. Mine was replaced once and the fix has worked. I want to get the upgraded part before my warranty expires. I only have 2yrs here. Does anybody have any new information? I will post up as much as I can learn with the language barrier I face here.

Thanks
