Oil Filter Part #
#1
I picked up an oil filter from Schomp BMW after they fixed my tranmission cable...and i've finally gotten around to changing the oil (@4800 miles).
My problem is that the new filter cartridge looks a bit different from the old one.
The new one has a plastic frame inside and a plastic piece on one end that the old one doesn't have. Also the hole on one end is extremely small -- on the old one the holes were the same size.
Also should I be concerned that the new filter's box has part # 11 427 512 446 on it, while the part itself says it is part # 11 427 509 208???
So...am I just not making sense of this or do I have the incorrect part?
Confused and unhappy,
f0

OK... i think i've got it figured out...
Looks like the part got redesigned. The old part had a rubber gasket at one end that made the diameter smaller -- on the new one, the paper hole was just made smaller and a hard platic piece glued on the end.
So...I guess everything's OK!
(However...just in case...If my engine dies because this part is wrong, would the dealer be liable for giving me the wrong part?)

I wouldn't think so, because the dealer will service your car and change the oil & filter at the designated intervals for free. Initially anyway.

I had the same problem on my forst oil change at 4,000. I was told what they had done was decided the "S" filter would work in bothe models. I am very sure the newer Coopers have had the oil filter container updated. Most of the people on MINI2 thought I'd been smoking something when I described my situation.
All you have to do is to jam the new filter over the plastic tube part. It doesn't want to go, but it will. Then just put it all back together. I have more detailed instructions if you want them. Got the info from Flow MINI.

So is that filter the same one used in other BMW's?? Can I go to an "NON-Mini" dealership here in Dallas-Fort Worth and cross it to another?
Thank you!!!
P.S. After break in I will be running Amsoil 0W-30. Look forward to my posted Oil Analysis every 10,000 miles and discription of MPG's, feel, sound, etc..

My friend the Amsoil dealer would be very interested in seeing those results as well. I will be sure to forward them to him.
