You may have to start asking backseat passengers if they have any problem sitting next to the Emergency Exit.

Fixed it..whoohoo..but looks like I need a new bolt as I booged up the thread in the process of tightening the torx. Anyone have the part number for the bolt that holds on the rear boot? There are 2 bolts when you open up the hatch...one of the left and one on the right both are the same Torx bolt.

Thx!

I'm going out to check my hatch right now. I've heard of rear seat removal, but this is the first rear hatch removal. Open the sun roof and you'll have flow through ventilation!

Well, not exactly, now the wheel bearings are making a god awful sound now. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Time to change them. Brakes were ordered and will be here Monday.

Sorry to hear about your hatch bolt problems. I just had a similar hatch problem where the hatch hinges on my '05 MINI broke in half. There's another thread about lubricating hatch hinges so you can find out info there, but basically, what happens is that the hinge consists of a pin about 10 millimeters in diameter with a sheet metal hinge wrapped around it. Water can get on the pin and it rusts, the sheet metal hinge rusts to the pin and when you open and close your hatch the sheet metal hinge flexes back and forth and eventually breaks. Classic MINI fixed mine under warranty but I'll bet this is a bigger thing than we know about. Meanwhile spray some WD-40 (or your favorite lubricant) on the hinge/pin area.

The boot of my father's 03 MC fell off one day. His car is out of its warranty so he had to pay for it. Mini of Peabody did the repair and did a great job. Sadly, when the door fell off it got a serious dent in it which can not be repaired, so he needs an entirely new door. Hopefully this won't happen to my 06MC!

I didn't open my boot for a long time (a few months).

When I opened it, the hatch only went up about 1/2 way before the cylinders wouldn't push it up anymore.

I noticed the body sheet metal around the hinges was flexing pretty bad. The hinges were binding up pretty bad. I lubed them up and all is good. Had I not noticed the problem, I imagined the hinges getting ripped off.

Wow, I'm late to the party, but when I read your post, this instantly popped into my mind...

Maybe just funny to Chicagoans, but WGN used to show it nationally, too.

I'm glad, not really (more relieved) to see I'm not the only one that is having problems with my hatch. Mine hasn't fallen off, but the hinges keep bending and forcing the hatch out of alignment! I have lubed the hinges several times now in hopes that it will stop. It seems to help for a while then right back! Very Frustrating!
Is there any threads telling about more common problems???

This thread is important, as the problem may be widespread...

That being said, I'm moving it to the 1st Gen Stock Problems/Issues forum.
