Grunting MCS rear end

I dont know if this is a common problem or what, but when i first let off the clutch sometimes you can hear what sounds like the rear diff making a grunt ( not too loud ) right as i begin to move.

Could just be another natural noise?

You may be hearing the hill hold feature, which is disengages the brakes when you let the clutch out. Does it happen mainly when you are on a hill?

Hill hold? Is that standard or an option? Just never heard of it on the Mini before, and I read the manual! (well most of it.)

Doesn't the hill hold feature come with the DSC option on the R56?

Next the foo foo valve

Really look over that hill hold feature too.If that isnt making the noise check the foo foo valve.

There may not be a rear diff, but there definitely is a hill hold feature (it may be part of DCS). So, before you say wise-*** things, learn about the car.

I've got an '07 S with DSC; it does have hill-hold. Nice.
I think the noise he's talking about is the normal tranny noise when you take off in first gear; it groans similar to a '53 Chevy pick-up.

My new noise is the grinding flywheel noise that's a momentary burst when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. Looks like it's a common problem with early-build R56 mt's.
Wish me luck.

My R53 MCS has a hill hold feature. It also doubles as a hand brake & 180 degree turning device.

The OP didn't say what model of MINI they have. If it's an 07 with DSC it very well could be the brakes letting off.

I haven't noticed that noise. He said the noise is coming from the rear. Since the tranny is in the front, it's probably not that, although sometimes the source of a noise is hard to determine.

And, for those of you who think we are crazy, look at page 67 of the manual (you know, that booklet that comes with the car and tells you how to use it). It is called Hill Start Assist.

Rather than getting snappy, realize you're posting to the 1st generation bulletin board while speaking of the 2nd generation.

Valid point, which someone could have easily pointed out, rather than making wise-*** remarks. As was noted previously, the poster did not say whay year his car is.

No, the problem is that I am tired of people being jumped on because they have the nerve to suggest there is something about their MINI or MINI the company that is not perfect; that we are somehow idiots if we don't just accept every "[FONT=Times New Roman][SIZE=3]idiosyncrasy" MINI throws at us. Thats the thing though, lots of cars have litle quirks that their owners just accept, wether its a defect or not.

You dont hear me going running to complain to Mazda because my RX7 doesnt like running. 60% of the time it works everytime.

Dont even get me started on my Turbododges. I'm suprised Chrysler has avoided many many lawsuits based on those cars!

Well, if your RX7 doesn't like running, and you don't complain, you deserve it. I have never owned another car, with the exception of the Vega, where the dealer, at least, has not made a serious effort to address problems with a car.

Yes, I deserve it, as does every single RX7 owner in the world. Its a quirk of the car. Turbo rotaries are tempermental even in stock trim. Nature of the beast. I put up with it because its an amazing car.

I guess there just arent that many true car enthusiasts left that are willing to deal with quirks in order to own some of the nicest cars ever built.

Cars have gotten so good that now if there is a little problem folks scream LEMON & want to take legal action.

I'm old enough to know what a truly crappy car is. The cars now are almost on par with appliances as far as reliability goes. That's a great thing, but many cars have lost their soul as a result.

So, now, if you expect your car to work, you're not an enthusiast. I, too, am old enough to know what crap cars are. I also remember not growing up without central a/c in my house. That doesn't mean I am going to tolerate a system that doesn't cool my house.

I know theres Hill assist

I know theres hill assist on the 07s. if your so smart tell him how to take out his DVOM and test the module to tell if its working properly... come on... rear diff... I don t think the guy should be trying to diagnos something if he thinks theres a rear diff in a front drive car. Ill give you some advice... take the car to your dealership or another shop and let a professional repair your car properly. Its an expensive car so it is expensive to fix, guess what thats life. It will probably save him money than having to tow a car thats in pieces to the dealer and explain what happend when he tried to fix his car. the shop won t charge you an arm and a leg for diagnosis and if his car is an 07 its probably warrenty. relax
