I noticed that when ever I'm accelerating hard...personally I like it cuz yeah it sounds like the supercharger...it makes me feeling like the italian job haha...mine isn't as loud as i would like tho haha

I had posted this on another thread specifically about automatic transmissions and then on the Clubman forum, as well.

Driving a new Clubman MC automatic. Question 1: do you any of you notice a high pitched whistling sound? I've been told it's "normal" to the 2nd generation...I hear it when the right hand side window is down an inch or all the way - and hear it on the highway and at slow speeds - and less loudly while in neutral in the driveway...as the rpms go higher it increases.
Just to give you complete coverage, I've posted on my regional forum NEMINI.org where Partsman has gone into some very helpful details: http://nemini.org/index.php?topic=10...;topicseen#new

Unfortunately, my SA says "it's normal"...BUT they did not test drive it with me. I am finding it very hard to believe it's normal to hear a whistling sound like this all the time while driving...that one can hear over the news on the radio even on while driving on the highway...

Update: Thankfully, we figured out what was causing our whistling noise - a poorly fitting mirror cap on the passenger's side! Weird but true - mirror cap fixed and annoyingly loud whistling is gone!

I have a similar noise on my cooper. Louder when cold. Has anyone gotten this noise fixed? We had it at the dealer and they said it was "normal". It sounds like a water pump or powersteering pump bearing going bad to me....

I've listened to the MCS clatter noise on startup and this is different, this is more of a whistle or whine that eventually lessens as the car warms up.

Well mine took 2 water pumps and finally stopped, but yours sounds different symptomswise. Mine happened more when the car warmed up (so the rpms would be at their lowest at idle), only happened at idle, and the original waterpump did it most when cold outside, and the replacement did it more when it was warm outside (go figure).

I would ask them to get their stethoscopes out and have a deep listen. And I just pull the crappy car card of how I bought a new car and now at stop lights and signs people look and ask whats wrong with my car haha. Actually someone did ask me when I had the whistle

Dan Q reminded me that I forgot to post results of my visit with the mechanics on this particular issue. Sorry folks!

Rasmussen MINI spent over a day giving our coop a thorough comb over. They explained all the tests and diagnostics they went through, I was blown away. They didn't just brush this off. Afterall that however, they found no mechanical problem associated with the noise.

We have had the catalytic converter replaced after our engine light repeatedly tripped. I am no mechanic so I can't say if the two are linked, but we've had no problems with the coop since, including the whistling noise.

Since we only heard the whistling sound on a really hot day, after running the coop for awhile, we are waiting for summer to be sure.

All that said, dealing with this hasn't been that big of a deal for us. Rasmussen's been great, the coop always runs like a champ, and still smilin everytime I drive... after a year and a half of ownership.
