That is your battery vent tube. It is supposed to be connected to the side at the top of the battery. It vents the caustic battery fumes to the outside of the car.
Is that rust I see in your battery box?

That's the battery vent line. When you put the battery back in, plug it into the vent in the side of the battery.

Avoid using a 'wet' electrolyte battery which does not use an external vent that the hose can connect to for two reasons: Some 'wet' cells vent hydrogen gas that will collect in the MCS passenger compartment when charging. The MINI 'wet' battery uses the vent to prevent this. Also, some such batteries release minute amount of acid vapor or even liquid electrolyte that will eat up the sheet metal battery box in no time.

A modern 'absorbed glass mat' battery like the Optima or Odyssey batteries entrain the electrolyte in sponge-like separators between the battery plates, so there is no loose electrolyte to spill, and the chemical process retains gasses that would normally escape when charging. A wet cell designed with an external vent connection is the other solution.

that actually is just dirt not rust ... and let me check if the battery has that connection, because, to be honest with you, it was the first time i check that section of my car .
