July 16th | LA BMWCCA Auto-X | CA Speedway
You'll be an a smoother surface at Ca Speedway with way less pea gravel between the finish and start areas. Not as smooth as Irwindale, but smoother than Hollywood Park and cleaner too. Expect the course to be about the same speed as Hollywood Park. Probably 2nd gear max.
For those of you that need help, I would suggest to find an instructor with front wheel drive experience. FWD cars require a different driving style than RWD or AWD to go fast.
Although I hadn't seen him in awhile, Patrick was at Hollywood Park. His GF had or has a Mini and he's autocrossed it a few times. I don't know of any others. You guys may want to ask.
I would also ask them to take it slow and show you the lines the first lap. It dosen't do anyone any good to have them go out and banzi the course while you're hanging on for dear life. You may want to let them drive two laps, the first slow and the second fast. If you feel like you're not getting anything out of them or they're distracting you, kick 'em out and go on your own. I hate it when people are talking while I'm trying to go fast.
While you're out helping to chaulk the course, walk the whole thing. Look for lines and then see how they compare when driving vs walking.
Have fun guys/gals. I won't be at this one as I'll be at the SD event on the 8th. Sundays are too hard for me (old age I guess).

Mike Potter was at the last San Diego BMWCCA event. He has an extensive FWD race background (autocross and One Lap that I know of) and is a BMWCCA instructor. He currently owns a Red MK5 GTI and is also the owner of parts4vws.com. I got to know Mike when I had my VW Jetta VR6 and was fortunate enough to get him as my instructor for a bit at the last SD BMWCCA event. If he's there, I would recommend him as he does have a solid FWD background.

With San Diego over, time to look ahead to Sunday.
We know who's in (first post) and who's out (rory, matt, jerry, teresa)
Who else wants to join us? To run or to spectate. We'd love to have more.
This is the inagural event for the new MINI classes (MINI stock and MINI modified). We have some good numbers already, but if anyone is on the fence, please join us to help kick off this new classing with a strong showing.

Jimmy: given that we need to head out the 10, how about we meet at the Shell station on Cloverfield (right near the 10). I'm thinking of a 5:15 target for a meet time, and would want to be on the road by 5:30.
Sound good?

Room for Spectators?
Question: I'd love to check this out (it's about 15 min. away from my house!)- but not ready to track my 1/2 day old MCS. Would a "spectator" still have to pay the entry fee? Or should I say, are spectators allowed?

Spectators are allowed (see the bottom of the first post for more details). There is no "gate" or "parking" fee. Just tell the person at the main gate you're there for the BMWCCA autocross. If you're there at lunchtime, as a spectator you can also purchase a lunch from BMWCCA for $5 (it might be $10, but I'm pretty sure it's $5). That lunch is included in the $65 cost for those participating in the event.
Also: I can't emphasize this enough. Please everyone observe the 10-15 MPH speedlimit inside the california speedway grounds on your way from the gate to the autocross lot and on your way back again. California Speedway security will kick people out if they go hot rodding around the access roads at the speedway.

I have about 700 miles now, maybe on Sunday I'll go a little faster.

Hope to see you there.

Thanks for the info Dave. Certainly will try to make it.
Canyon MINI at California Speedway
For anyone coming out on Sunday. If you are spectating or you have an extended rest break, you may want to high-tail-it over to the inside of the speedway. Bob (Canyon MINI) will be racing on the road course. I'm not sure of his scheduling yet or if he even knows it, but if I get firm times for when his run group is suppose to be out on the track I'll post it up.

EDIT: Just needed to include the latest information. Apparently with the discount coupon it's $10 to get in (to the inner road course part of California Speedway. The spectating at the autocross is still free - see the first post for details on that).

The plan is to use the race for the mini as a sorting out session. It has only been recently put together and never driven . He does not plan on racing it seriously but in the heat of battle who knows . Now as far as the camero goes , its ON ! The Mini race is schedualed for about noon and the camero class will be about 1 pm. See you there.

Well? Autocross results people. Where are they?
I imagine it was hot there as it was very hot here
. I spent the day floating behind the boat wiggling my ears like the hippos in the Disney Jungle Cruise ride. I may have tossed back a few Newcastles too but I don't remember
.
Hope everyone had fun.
