You're right, California has "a lot of excellent roads" ... and I really love find out more

Oh, NO, please! You misunderstood. When I said thank you, I did mean THANK YOU for your suggestion to consider other MINI enthusiasts outside of CA! It was not a sarcastic statement.

Man! The more I read this thread the more I get exicted I just can't wait to see it happen

I think DVLMINI has more "privilege" to choose the first run 'cuz he's ...umm...da 1st

It seems like we have MINI "Clubs" all over the west coast and most of them are well organized. I think each "local" club can petition their suggested location for the next following runs. I hope WCC will democratically vote for the "chosen one"

I'm so excited!
And I just can't hide it!

I like to think 'bout Utah, AZ, ...etc... included in too ... Oh yeah, no problemo dcsmd007

The Trinity Alps (Western side of Highway 36) see an average of about 2 to 3 inches of rainfall in October. Same goes for the ranges between 5 and 101 (Highways 3, 96, 299, etc). When it's clear, it's gorgeous, but some of the higher passes are miserable in the rain.

Having worked in that area for years, I would not recommend anything past the end of September.

I'm in....

Maybe even a week long event on Highway 1 from San Diego to the Canadian border...

I don't think I would want to try to plan that however!

It would be a bit tough to plan. Especially since California Highway 1 only runs from Santa Monica in LA to Legget in Mendecino County.

But nothing is more beautiful than taking 101 from Leggett all the way to Tillamook. I love 101 on the Oregon Coast!

Terrific start! I love some of the sparsely travelled roads in the Mendocino-Humboltd county area. Gorgeous place to Motor. I'm there.

I make the run from San Diego to Seattle at least once a year, I'm headed out again in August, and I love the Leggett to Rockport run both ways - at 1:00 am it's like a being in a big video game. The asphalt is fairly new, and the bigger vehicles seem to avoid it because of the twisties. There are a fair amount of decreasing radius turns, tho, and it's seriously hard on the brakes. I've never stayed near there, so I'm not sure of accomodations. There are also several roads in Oregon that I like around Tillamook, (we can get fresh ice-cream, and cheese, too! Yum!), especially the constant-radius turns - very easy to go fast and safe.

I would prefer to leave the Avenue of the Giants out of the equation even tho it's full of nadgery bits, as its posted speeds are very low, for a reason - it's more of a pleasant shady drive than a hell-bent-for leather run.

Being from the southern end of all this, up and down Mt. Palomar is always a hoot, and the eastern parts of Sand Diego, Riverside, and the surrounding LA area have skidillions of great roads. The wine country has its own attractions, as well as some nice places to stay, but I've never done a serious twisty there....yet. ;-)

Rob,
Thanks for the input. I'll have to look into my slang log for "nadgery bits" but I've heard the same about the Ave. of the Giants and perhaps we'll schedule it in as a 'scenic' drive over the course of the event. Although it's not a challenging road, some might enjoy the leisurely pace of a pretty drive.

My vote is for 36. Tons of side trips for both scenic runs and spirited runs. It's also close to Oregon and Washington.
