How do I keep unread threads "new"?
How do I keep unread threads "new"?
Every time I come here, only the items that changed since my last visit are shown as "new". This means, if I don't look at EVERYTHING that's shown as new, the next time I come here I won't know what I haven't seen. I would like it to keep things I haven't seen as new until I look at them regardless of how many visits I've been here. Is there an option I'm missing or can we get one?
For example, if there's a new post in a MOTD thread that I don't want to read now but I will later, how do I keep it new? when I log in later, it won't look new anymore - the icon changed to show nothing has changed since my last visit.

A couple thoughts.
Up top at quick links, this will give you all new posts followed by old posts in order of last bump. This is sitewide and gets you into new areas. (thats how I found this thread) You have to "mark as read" to get them to change, but I don't know if this will help since it is a lot of posts over time and it may change after a period of time.
Subscribing to a thread will make it easy to find and you can easily look at the date of last post.
Hope that helps, but I don't know of a way to "mark as unread" like email.

Unfortunately the forum software does not support marking them new vs read in that manner; and the method you described things currently being is how it's supposed to work and the only way it works. And that comes from the folks at our parent company with a few levels of understanding above mine when it comes to the forum software.
Something you may want to try, that I do with some sections that I need to monitor regularly, is do some advanced usage of your subscriptions. In the Forum Dispaly, there's a button on the topright labeled Forum tools You can click subscribe to this forum and then set things up for no email notification. Then when you go to your User CP forums with threads you are yet to read will show up as having activity. You can also do this in the thread tools, with specific threads of interest. It's not a cure all, but it might be a few steps closer to the experience that you prefer.

FWIW, I've seen this too...
I figured likely it was just the way it is. Thus, I try to at lead skim thru what I'm interested in down thru the new list of posts.
I also find if I miss it, the threads usually come back again some hours or days later so I just catch up.
I find the subscribe function not very good or practical, with an e mail link in anyway. Way too much junk/trivia, at least on higher volume threads like the Alta AP as an example. I ended up shutting most of them off.
Final thing I notice. Sometimes to see new threads, I have to close my browser completely (not just the current window, but all of it). Then instead of a "no new posts" screen at times, I get at least some. And similarly, I try to remember to close NAM before computer goes to sleep so it doesn't think incremental messages are "old" when I go back to it.
