NAM needs a live chat.

Maybe Im just blind and havent seen it yet, but I think it might be beneficial to put a live chat up on nam. Sometimes there are questions that people need answered right away and that can help. If if people are bored and want to talk with out starting a thread. Maybe we can start a poll and see what others think?

The idea has merit. It would work best if various chat rooms could be established so you could selectively between them, since the conversation in the "My MINI is on Fire" chat room would probably be different than the discussion in, say, the "2011 Support Group" chat room.

I'd love to have a chat room designated for our local club too.

I like the idea but I would then spend even more time on here.

It would be pretty handy for those who need quick answers for sure. I would probably kill more time on here though, yetti is right!

This is a great idea. How do we make it happen?

Yup. This has been raised before and when I asked around I was told that right now with how forum software is setup it is not feasible and it presents a whole new level of challenges for moderation.

The best thing for now really is for people to just feel free posting and respond with as much as they can, and if you look down in OT there's lots of chat threads, that from time to time get enough people on at once that they do flow as one big fast moving conversation. Also having all the info broken down into threads and stored int he forums means those searching don't miss out on some key pieces of knowledge that would otherwise be lost or buried deep into a conversation. People can also fill in their instant messenger fields in their profiles if they want to have off site live conversations.

Yes on the live chat! Especially since the search function is pretty hard to use!

rs25 has a live chat and it works out well too. I dont think they moderate it that strictly. It gets really fun in there sometimes haha

Nice idea, but NAM is often too slow for me already. Anything that taxes their servers even more isn't the right way to go. Course, if they used a third party service...

Let me reiterate that this is technically not feasible as something that would be happening within NAM at this point.

Additionally,
If chat was offered...our concern is that a lot of valuable information conveyed via chat wouldn't be archived in a way that could later be searched.
and
if you are discussing MINI topics none of the information is archived or shared with other members of the site.
If you search you will find many thread that have raised this issue before and you'll find several links to off site chatrooms that have long been dormant. I just logged into three of them, found I was the only one and logged back out.

If you are looking to have more conversation with other MINI enthusiasts there are several features already on the site that are up and running and ready to be used, but largely do not appear to be in use by many in this thread. Go into your user CP, on your profile fill out the Instant Messagin networks you have accounts on, then people can see your posts and when logged in can get your IM screen name and Instant message you that way. Also, add people to your buddy list and you can PM them directly or know when they're on NAM and give them a try on the instant messaging sites. Also increase your post count, if you have something to say then share it with us, start new threads, post in the daily chat threads in off topic, play the off topic games.

Take advantage of the Pulse feature and the New Posts and keep an eye on the "Latest Main Topics" box on the left side of the screen. I know that we're also working to add a feature where instead of seeing the latest thread with posts you'll be able to watch the posts themselves as they get added to the boards.
