Pulse broken?
Mark -- lately when I hit PULSE (which I guess is a shortcut to bookmarkpulse.html), I get a brief flash of a new window opening up and disappearing, and then nothing, nil, zip, nada. Is PULSE broken?
Thanks, Tom
Thanks, Tom
Tom,
Can you tell me what version operating system and browser you are using? Under Mozilla 1.0.1 (OSX), IE 5 (OSX), and IE 6 (Win98) it appears to be working well. Thanks!

Do you have a pop-up blocker installed or enabled on your browser? This would cause the problem you are describing. I did a quick test in the "Opera" browser, and having the "Refuse Pop-Up Windows" option enabled caused the problem you described.

Tom,
If you are using IE, sometimes with popup windows you have to re-register the URLMON.DLL which is done by clicking START-RUN and type in the run box:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
This might fix your problem.

Mark -- running latest IE6 under Win2K. I suspect that the problem may be a popup killer. Recently installed a high-speed DSL connection (replacing an earlier ISDN connection) and put in firewall software on the "main" machine.
Just checked my laptop (also connected to the LAN and DSL router) which has IE6 running under WinXP and it works fine. So the problem is somewhere in the "main" box's firewall. And the URLMON.DLL tip didn't solve the problem.
Thanks to all for the help -- Tom

Mark -- I just found the problem here. I had recently added the newest Beta 2.0 version of the Google toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com). The toolbar has the ability to squelch popups. Turning off the popup killer solved the problem. Fortunately, the ON/OFF (or is it on/moron?) switch for the toolbar popup killer sits there at the top of IE6 and all I have to do is to toggle it OFF when using MCO.
Thanks for the help -- Tom

Tom,
Glad to hear that you determined the source of the problem. I doubt I would have figured that one out remotely but as I'll be installing the toolbar on one of my machines I'll be sure to remember this. Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the configuration of Norton Internet Security but my best recommendation is to look in the associated help files and search for pop-up blocking to see if you can allow some sites and not others. The reason this is causing problems is that the Pulse is launched like a pop-up ad would. The big difference is that you are choosing to do it versus the typical pop-up when you least expect it behavior we are all seeing today across the net. If you determine the configuration steps be sure to post it here so that others having similar problems can resolve them as well. Thanks!

Mark -- one nice thing about the Google toolbar: When you are logged in on one site and click "Allow Popups", the action applies only to that site. So the toolbar popup killer can prevent the X-10 ads and still allow Pulse to work.
