Spell Check in Firefox does not work
Spell Check in Firefox does not work
Mark, et al,
I don't know if I mentioned this in person or online, but the spell check feature in Firefox that works on all the other vBulliten based forms I subscribe does not work on NAM. Along the same lines if I was to write my post in Outlook or Word and then copy/paste it onto NAM all the formatting tags show in the text and need to be edited out by hand.
It is quite possible that a greater level of civility could be reached if the spell check worked. I know that when reading a post that already tweeks my nose that if that post is also full of spelling errors it adds a deeper layer of annoyance. This leads to a spiraling effect of replies proffered with a bit more apathy towards the original poster.

We've spoken about this earlier and I hope I can address it with a new update to the site software (obvioiusly I've broken it somehow).
If only civility would improve by getting spell check into the site...we would be so lucky

I belieive the proper usage is 'We should be so lucky'. Best said in an older Eastern European Jewish Man type accent with emphasis added via hand gestures of opening palms towards the recipent.

LOL wow such a visual thing... this is why I love you
Is this maybe an instance of the WYSIWYG versus standard editors?
Using the standard editor I get the little red underline things for words that it believes are incorrect.

Ta Da!!
Thanks CmdrVimes. I switched to the standard editor and tried it, no joy. But then I thought to self, this is Windows, when all else fails reboot. So I logged off NAM and shut down Firefox, made sure the Firefox process was stopped. Restarted a new Firefox session, logged back onto NAM and VIOLA!!!!
Spell check is fixed.
Let a new era of civility begin!!!

Mine works in Firefox 2.0.0.6 on an Intel Macintosh. I have it set in the preferences to automatically spell-check, but if I turn that off, I can still access the spell-checker by right-clicking in the text window and selecting "Spell check this field".
Can't believe I didn't see that context menu before...
Hmmm...I'm using FF 2.0.0.6 (Mac) and have the preference set to spell check while I type. I don't get the red underlining for misspellings unless I use the contextual menu to select "Spell check this field". Anything special you had to do on the Mac to make spell checking work all the time?
Except for NAM I usually see spell checking working everywhere else.

Ahh....I think I figured out the mystery. Here is a little tidbit I found on the vBulletin site just now
We're currently running 3.6.1 so we should get FF spell check when I get the site upgraded to new software. In the meantime you can either right click (CTRL click on the Mac) and select Spell check this field if you are using the WYSIWYG editor.
Alternatively change to the Standard Editor and you'll get spell check all the time.
Mark
vBulletin 3.6.3 and earlier do not flag the Editor field as a field that can be spellchecked. So all you need to do is right-click in the Editor field and check
Spell check this field.
Spell check this field.
Alternatively change to the Standard Editor and you'll get spell check all the time.

If you clear Firefox's cache (CTRL+F5) spell check should now work in the message body area when creating a post.
I found a way to patch this issue today so give it a try to see if it works.
Thanks!

I dunno if somebody allready said this (because y'all are using big words that I don't understand
) but I use FireFox & if I want to use spellcheck I just click the NAM "switch editor mode" button (A/A button at the top right) & it spellchecks in that mode. But I wish it would check in the default mode without me having to do that
edit: nevermind... after I hit F5 spellcheck is now working in the default editor

UGH I hate my computers
I got so excited at work because I hit F5 & the spellcheck started working but the same can't be said for my laptop. It just defys logic. I use 3 computers, all set up the same running XP & Firefox with Zone Alarm Pro Firewall & it never ceases to amaze me how all 3 computers consistently react differently to the same exact situation
Oh well at least I will spell well when at work
