Rotating Squeal - Brake Caliper Bushing Sticking?

I have screeching from my brakes when rolling. It stops when I gently press the brake pedal. Sounds like rears.

I just installed the brass Brake Caliper Bushings, and since they were a gift (used), did not have instructions. I may not have greased them well enough.... (I also just put on TSW rotors, carbotech pads, ATE SuperBlue fluid, stainless brake lines, and painted the calipers - all the way around).

Would a sticky bushing/guide bolt cause the caliper to not release the pads? - because both the rears have some definite friction from the pads when I rotate them by hand when on the jack stands. Right rear is worse than left.

Thanks,
Scott

Did you use any anti-squeal compound on the contact points? What kind of grease did you use on the bushngs?

I picked up some high temp silicone grease from the Ford (Motorcarft) dealer that works pretty well.

Mmmm, I used some (not a lot) of the cheap stuff from Autozone on the bushings. Dark black, in a plastic jar with a brush applicator. But, it's only been 3 weeks since I did it. I can't imagine it would be that bad by now (but I might have been light on the bushings).

I used the stuff everywhere except on the little wires on the back of the pads where they touch the calipers - perhaps that is what is squeaking.

The BIG QUESTION is - how much drag should the pads have when the brakes are not being depressed. I roll the wheels and they stop pretty quickly - they drag quite a bit (front and rears). They do perhaps a full turn if I give them a twirl. Is this right?

They do not squeal while I have it on jacks. When driving, the squeal stops when I tap the brakes, then in about 5 seconds, it begins again. It gets louder the faster the wheels turn. It sounds like the pad is rubbing the rotor, as I have the same sound when braking after they've been under hard braking (at the track). Could be those wires on the pads....

If the caliper bushing are binding, would that keep the pads against the rotors a little harder possibly creating the squeal? I don't understand how much the calipers release when you take your foot off the brakes. I can't imagine it is very much movement.

Hey Scott,

Check this pic and make sure the rear inside pad clip is snapped on the piston

If this clip is not on the piston, the inside pad will hang up on the rotor.
I've seen more then a few that came off or were never on. The clip is on 3 sides of the piston.

Ah, another rookie mistake!!! I thought that clip looked strange. I'll bet the little clips are destroyed now after the day at the track.

Thanks for info. Going to check now.

Ok AutoXCooper, you were right on. That's why I love this site.

Having never changed my pads before this, and not looking closely at my Bentley manual. I did not pick up on the fact that the clips on the rear pads attached to the caliper. Makes sense though....

The little clips were in fact, not destroyed. The back of the pad had a little line in it where the caliper was pressing on the retaining wire, but it all worked out when I attached it.

Rears rotate freely and without the squeal. When I changed them I noticed that the retaining wires on one of the old pads were broken. When I bought the car used last year, I had this same squeal, and now I know why.

Thanks!

Scott, this is a very common issue & one I have fallen victim to also, along with many others.

Great picture AX Cooper.

Maybe a moderator could make this a sticky & put this information in the brake forum.
