Lightweight Muffler?

What's everyone using for a muffler for G-stock autocross?

Supertrapp....lightest way to go, I haven't done mine yet. It's on the list of things to do.

Yeah, that's what I've got now, and everyone says it sounds like crap. (I can't tell 'cause I'm always driving it)

I guess I was just wondering if the Quicksilver or MyMini systems were that much heavier. I'm guessing they are only like 10 lbs or so heavier.

5 when I'm driving around town. I use 12+ for autocross events. I think they are talking about how it sounds with only 5 discs. It makes kind of a hissing sound. But if I run more than 5 discs it's too loud for the street (and my wife).

Mitch,
It sounded good to me at the Auto-X Event back in January!

Maybe I'm over reacting. I'll try running it with 12+ discs at the Yakima events and see what you think.

I really like how it sounds without any discs, but it's too loud to pass the db meter.

just a thought.. could you one ball an aftermarket exhaust if the exit pipes where it splits are the same size? that would loose alot of weight too...

There are a couple one sided exhausts on the market, these come to mind.....

Alta
Quicksilver

And, the Coast to Coast dual sided titanium exhaust is 12lbs without resonator or 15 pounds with resonator. I would guess my Supertrapp and piping is heavier than that.

For me? I'm tired of the Supertrapp, it is too loud for me even with only 4 discs considering that I have headers. :-) I think I am going to get a Milltek and run it 99% of the time and then for the Solo Nationals, I will put the Supertrapp back on to save weight.

Didn't you end up with the same 5" disc SuperTrapp I have? I'm still very happy with mine as it is much quieter (6 db) than my old 4" disc Trapp and has better tone. If you did get the 5" did you get the straight piece of inlet pipe all the way in to butt up against the perforated part of the interior of the Supertrapp? Others may want to check my exasutive posts on this subject.

Guess I'm the only one who went with the ALTA so I could get the weight on the right side of the car.

Yes, I sure did. I wonder if something is different between the 02-05. My 04 MCS with Alta was much quieter than my identical 05 MCS with Alta.

One thing that comes to mind that might be different, I don't have the resonator, do you? Another thing, I have a Milltek Header with highflow cat as well.

So is there enough room to run the 5" Supertrapp and still retain the battery box? What size inlet pipe is the 5"?

The 5" comes in 2.5, 3.0 & 3.5 inlet sizes.

Craig, No resonator and I have the London Stainless Headers, exact same dimensions as the Miltek but it has a different Highflow cat.

I use the 2.5" inlet and you must use a side rear exit like the Cooper. Go back and check pictures of Garfield 's car for a good idea of what it looks like unless maybe OasisT has some of his, which is an exact copy of mine and has the 5" where Garfield had the 4". Ours is a little smoother layout but the muffler is noticeably larger.

I'm running a 2.5" inlet 4" Supertrapp right now. But it's still a little loud on the street even with 5 discs (I'm running the open tip in the photo below for track use). Plus, it "hisses" quite a bit under heavy accelleration. I'm wondering if switching to a 5" Supertrapp would make a noticable difference?

It did for me and I'm using 18 discs on the 5", where I only had 11 on the 4". The 5" has more than twice as much insulation in it as the 4". I did notch my black trim in the rear to let the exhaust sit higher and look better. I also bought a Coast Fab/Burns Stainless muffler that I planed to splice in after the headers as a resonator but found it wasn't needed after going to the 5" disc Trapp. I did try just the Burns as a rear muffler instead of the 4", before the switch, and it was no better than the 4" Trapp, actually worse in some ways. 5" Trapps have a much higher flow area even with the same number of discs and inlet size.

There is also a 24" long, 4" disc Trapp that I've seen on a MCS, if you stayed with the OEM 2.25" inlet that could work well and you'd still have the option of splicing in a light weight resonator like my Burns, though the $$ would start to add up.

Are there any audio or video recording of how some of these configurations sound? Can you have a setup that goes out the stock center cutout in the bumper (I am guessing not but had to ask). I am also guessing that notching out on the side to have a cleaner look would not be SCCA stock legal ... but I don't know.

Actually, you can do whatever you want with the exhaust, as long as it passes the sound test, is downstream of the cats and exits behind and below the driver's position.
