This excerpt was taken from the G Stock rules posted here.
“Any air filter may be used, as long as it is the same size and shape of the original. The air filter must fit in the original air box. Running without an air filter is also allowed.”

Can someone answer me this question very fast because I have a race tomorrow! Can I run in G Stock without any filter box what so ever? NO box NO filter?

I use a cold air intake for everyday driving, which is my only mod on my MCS, but put the standard filter box back on to race in G Stock. I’ve lost it somewhere and can’t find it. Will I be able to race in G Stock without a filter box at all, let alone not having a filter? I’m very new to auto-x and I’m the type of person who will always stay within the rules.

If you can’t win without cheating – you didn’t really win.

Thank you for mentioning this. You'd be surprised how many people don't feel this way though. Some actually think if you don't get caught you're not cheating or that some other guy has spent way more $$ on his car than I can on mine so it's OK for them to cheat so they can be competitive.

Yes, the answer is no. You have to be legal.

You'll need the airbox at least to be legal. So what can you do?

Keep searching for the parts- how big is your garage? Couldn't be much worse than mine.

Find another MINI owner that has done your kind of mod and knows where his intake box is (store your stock spare parts in one area for easy access so you don't loose them all)

Find a stock MINI of your type at autocross that is spectating and offer to give them something if they would let you borrow just the airbox parts to use for your runs. Bring some torx screwdrivers to do the task. Do the swap in a hurry before it is your time to drive.

Thanks gowest, but I’m from the old school of straight shooters and will push, but comply spicificly with the rules set to the task.

Please someone tell me if what I asked is OK. I have to drive a distance to get there and don’t want to make the trip in vainer.

Maybe after a talking with a friend I need to clarify only the top and filter is missing, not the entire box. Only the cover and filter is missing. I can get a filter today, but the cover I can not replace before tomorrow.

13.10 ENGINE AND DRIVE TRAIN
A. The engine air filter element may be removed or replaced. A
replacement element which is taller than standard may not be used
to hold the air cleaner cover open. No other components of the
air induction system may be removed, replaced or modified.

sndwave,

My read on this is the cover must be there in the original position. If you disclose that it is missing to to other competitors and they don't have a beef with it, then there is no problem. If they do have a beef, then they are probably just afraid you will beat them. Just explain the situation.

My 2 cents,

James

sndwave,

I really think that at the local level in a class that does not have a LOT of entrants, your G-stock competiton will most likely not have a problem with your non-conforming airbox, especially considering that you have NO OTHER significant modifications like exhaust or R-compound tires.

I really hope you either find the piece or take a chance and politely ask your competition if they will let you run despite a VERY minor issue with the rules.
