What happened to this turbo?

In August last year bought Mini Countryman S All4. Since that time fixed 'no start' problem and now am fixing low power at low speeds that feels like massive vacuum leak. That feeling made me to remove air intake hose from turbo and OMG! what is this mess?! why those edges are so damaged? Has anybody seen destroyed turbo intake like this and what could be the cause?

LOL, looks like its even missing the shaft nut!

The wheel in the turbo spins REALLY fast. If anything gets sucked in, almost instant death. My guess would be the intake tube split and part of it was sucked in.

that was my guess too as the vehicle has new aftermarket intake tube.

how extensive that damage could be? I understand that I need at least new turbo. could the fractions go beyond turbo?

Chances are good the pieces all got chewed up in the turbo and are possibly sitting in the intercooler inlet. I would definitely get a new turbo. Would be good idea to pull the intercooler and clean it out, too.

Factory intake boot cracked and sucked into the turbo.

Happened to this guy with a GP2 , his factory gasket was green, other MINI dependent on model is black. So the other hose/boot can crack with heat cycle and age. Can get sucked into the turbo under full pulls. Or someone did not install the intake boot on right and that inner gasket got sucked in.
