Help...5E83, DSC all wheel drive control, coil, open

I recently replaced my DSC pump in my 2011 Mini Countryman All4 S because of the DSC and 4X4 lights and codes 5e88 and 5e83 showing, indicating a bad pump. Now, the DSC is functioning again but I still have one code showing and the 4X4! Light is still on. In ISTA it reads the code to be 5E83, DSC all wheel drive control, coil, open. Anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

use NCS expert to recode it.

I recoded the DSC pump in WINKFP (I am having trouble with my NCS) and the light is still on. No other codes listed in ISTA other than the 5e83.

Winkfp is used to update the SW of the module. Now, you need to use NCS to code it. When you start NCS, chose the ABS module and excute all the jobs in the list. You can skip "lesen" jobs as they dont effect the coding. Make sure the car is on (not running) after each execution, turn off the car for 15 seconds. Then move to the next job til the end. Dont worry about error msgs.

lastly, what does ISTAD say about the code?

Thank you for the information. ISTA basically walks me through checking to make sure all of the sensors are plugged in completely, they are. The code is 5e83, DSC control module coil open.

So, for NCS there is a series of jobs that need to be coded? I selected the DSC/ABS module and then sg codieren, but I don’t recall a list of jobs.

I just finished running through the rest of the jobs under the DSC in NCS Expert and still no go. The 4X4! Light and DSC lights are still on. The DSC light is one of the circle lights on the tach and it is showing 4x4! in the window on the tach where it normally shows speed. No other codes or issues, other than the lights and the 5e83 code.

What happened when the lights originally came on was I was exiting the interstate and hit a big bump and all of a sudden the lights came on. At that time it had codes 5e88 and 5e83. I replaced the DSC pump and coded it and the 5e88 code went off, but the 5e83 and two lights remained.

this guy seemed to have the same issue..but no updates...https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-and-5e88.html

check if the wires or plugs did not come loose in the back at the diff. can you also use INPA to read wheels speeds?

I’m taking it to a Specialist shop tomorrow to see if they can diagnose the issue. I’ll post updates if they are able to provide any insight into the issue.

i took the car to the BMW shop last week and after running diagnostics (though I’m not convinced they did everything they said they did) they said that the DSC hydro pump was bad (which I had recently replaced). So I ordered and installed a rebuilt unit. Once the brakes were bled and the calibrations were complete, what pops up, the same 5e83, AWD control coil open, code. So, at this point I’m lost as to what to do. The shop claims they checked all the wiring/sensors, though it doesn’t look like any of the underside shielding was removed which would indicate they prob didn’t check the wiring at the rear diff.

Any my new ideas from anyone is appreciated!

Yes, both pumps were from AWD cars and were matching part numbers. The only thing I can think of is one of the sensors, speed sensor, wheel sensors, etc is bad, but since ISTA isn’t pointing me to any of them, I would just have to start replacing them and hoping it fixes the problem. One other thing I found in a post was someone who replaced the emcd all wheel drive clutch on the rear diff and it fixed the problem.

I read the same thing about replacing the diff. but when ISTAD gives you the code, do you calculate test plan? it doesnt point to anything? you can use ISTAD to read the wheel speeds while the car is running. I think you can select the module, then in the bottom, "call module functions" then check the diagnosis tab.

the test plan in ISTA walks you through checking all of the sensors/connections. Once you say all of the sensors are ok, it tells you to replace the DSC pump.

did you get speed reading from the back axles? also, check the rear diff...check the plug or even take it out to see if you get new codes.

Ok, I think I may have figured this out. I unplugged the wiring to the rear diff/emcd clutch and tested the plug going into the diff and it was reading as open (i’m Not sure it is supposed to be open, but I assume not). I left the rear diff unplugged and went for a drive and then pulled the codes again. Nothing new was showing, but it was still reading the 5e83 code. So, my educated assumption is that there is a problem in the diff/emcd clutch. Any counter thoughts from anyone? Am I missing something in my thought process?

Unfortunately the problem still isn’t fixed. I replaced the final drive/emcd clutch and i’m Still getting the 5e83 code. No idea where to go from here.

I wish I still had my CMS, I would've checked the values for you...Sometime, I find myself bending pins at the make connector triggering codes. did you confirm nothing is bent inside the ABS module connector?

I found this for you...check for continuity

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/r...ystem/DjWmrXnI

this is more involved over all wiring of the system

Did you ever get this issue resolved? I recently purchased a Mini with a 5e83 code and also found the circuit open but after reading this forum a little concerned throwing parts at it. The clutch does not have any resistance and I am assuming it should have? Where is a good place to get the emcd clutch I am not finding much online.

Unfortunately, no. After months of work, countless hours scouring forums, talking to professional mechanics and several thousand dollars in parts, we were never able to fix it. I eventually sold it cheap just to get rid of it.

Sorry I couldn’t be more help. I do wish you luck and if you find the solution I couldn’t, please leave it here.

We found a broken wire going to the right rear wheel and so far so good. We also had to use a different scan tool to communicate with that module. I will see how things go!
