CMS All 4 Trunk Wont Unlatch in Freezing Cold

Hi all,
It's been in single digits for a couple days here in NJ and I'm finding that the trunk latch mechanism in my 2012 Countryman All4 doesn't seem to properly work at all times. Sometimes it does...sometimes it doesn't.

I hear the latch activate when I open the trunk handle but it must not unlatch entirely because i can only open the trunk about 1/4" inch and it catches the latch.

Anyone else experiencing the same?

Thanks,

Its frozen, just like everything else in this weather. Try using a hair dryer on the latch to warm it up then once open spray some WD40 in the latch area to drive out any water.

I have noticed that the Countryman collects a LOT of water in the trunk well when I wash it. Open the trunk after a wash, and several cups of water will spill out. I imaging if your car gets snowed/rained on, and then it gets below freezing, the trunk may be really hard to open.

Thanks. Good tip about the water ingress. I will check that out and spray it with some WD-40....when I get it open.

But something makes me think it's not just 'frozen'. I mean, I hear the latch mechanism unlatch, but it must not unlatch all the way because when I try to open the trunk door, it hits a hard metal stop about 1/4" after opening. I know it's coming from the latch because there's nothing else in the way preventing the trunk door from swinging open.

Hmmm...re-reading your replies I was thinking you were saying the door was frozen shut...but on second review, are you saying the latch mechanism may be frozen and that's why it's unable to 'unlatch' all the way?

Thanks!

Got it open today. Hit it hard with WD-40. Temps were well above freezing and the trunk latch still had the glitch. I'm thinking a mechanical problem with latch itself.

Calling for service.

Thanks for the suggestions though. I really thought that would take care of it.

I remember reading another thread where someone had issues with their latch breaking or something.
