Red coolant temp light
Red coolant temp light
My car after about 5 minutes of driving throws the red coolant temp light and initiates the "limp" mode to prevent engine damage. When I stop and check it out the fan keeps running, but the coolant hoses are not even warm and there is coolant in the reservoir. Got the car picked up an hour ago and it is on its way to the dealer, I'll let you know the outcome.
Did you recently have your cooling system serviced?
Sometimes when the system is drained/refilled, a bubble works its way to the thermostat and the car thinks it's overheating. Driving around a little usually clears that up, in my experience.

Had this happen in my 2011 Cooper Countryman last week. Fan running long after stopped, didn't start the next morning, but did start when the tow truck showed up. I drove it to the dealership but the temp light was on when I got there. Pressure sensor was replaced, brought it home & the fan still is on with minimal driving. Looks like it will be going back to the dealer as soon as I can get it there. Fault code was 2F8F last week, will keep you posted.

Well apparently its fixed, they say it was a thermostat sensor, but that doesn't explain why it wouldn't start that one time. Now all they have to do is fix the piece of replacement chrome trim they mounted incorrectly (and fell off) and fix the stripe they messed and the hatch release\MINI emblem they scratched when opening the hatch with my car parked under a car on a lift...... OPPS!!!!
We had our '11 Countryman 6MT towed to the dealership this morning because our hot engine- yellow, then overheating -red lights came on. Oddly enough we were on the way home from the dealership last night, b.c we were thinking about buying another Mini for my husband when the light came on. It was still on this morning so we took it in.
As I was typing this they called and said that it was a faulty temp sensor and that it is all done and ready to go. We shall see tmw, b.c we live an hour away and they close before we can make it there.
Our loaner is a '12 S All4 Auto. It is fun to drive, but I miss my Ruby.

After I picked the car up last week, the fan has come on with everytime I drove it over 2 miles after the car has stopped. Sunday (after about 8 miles of driving) the fan came on & went off about 4 times (5-10 minutes) & had a burning smell. The service advisor at the dealership tells me it's normal for the fan to come on every time you drive the car. Anyone else seeing this? It certainly didn't happen with 8 years of driving a 2003 Cooper.
Our fan did that when we first got it in August, but it was hot out and we had the A/C on. It hasn't done it since it was hot out until last night. We were at several dealerships and I noticed it staying on after we got out at the last couple we went to. We drove about 35 mins home from when we stopped for gas and that is when the light came on. I guess we will see how she acts tomorrow when we pick her up.
So a little update. She seems to be running great, in fact, I think she is running better than ever. Our last tank of gas which was partially pre-check engine light we only got 130 miles on a half a tank. I knew something was up b.c that was super low. MPG for the tank was only 24mpg and we drove exactly the same as before.
Post-check engine thermostat fix I got 63 miles before I lost a single candy corn on the gauge. I would have to assume that when the car thinks something is wrong it dumps a lot of fuel to protect itself.

Thats helpful info mspro. I live just south of you in spring lake and have been noticing a big drop in economy when I drive the vehicle and I go easy on it. I have the starting issues (separate post). Looks like this temp issue is the culprit, but we dont have any codes yet.... Taking it in as soon as we can. Cheers for good forums and people that follow up on their posts!

Today (Saturday) same thing...driving around and nothing....hit some traffic and it popped up again and dissapeared just as quick.
checked the coolant level with a cold engine and it is at "max", with engine running it is below "min" which I know is normal. curious if there are bubbles trapped in the line? If there is air trapped would it not have dissapated by now with the amount I have driven the last couple days (about 150KM...mostly highway).
Any suggestions?
