Rolling Noise from dash

I couldn't find any other references to this so I figured why not ask and see if anyone else has experienced this.

What I'm hearing sounds like something rolling from front to back on the passenger side of the dashboard. My first reaction was that it sounded like a screw rolling around, but maybe a cable bundle moving back and forth?
It's a pretty clear sound when I brake at a stop sign or whatever.

I've cleaned out the glove box just to confirm that there was nothing in there and there's nothing on the dash or in any of the cupholders or door wells that I can find.

Any suggestions, or just add this to the list of things to have the dealer look into whenever I decide to take it in?

Not really a big problem since I can just turn up the radio and don't notice it all that much.

I get that too, although it has stopped for awhile (or I haven't been noticing it). Sounds almost like a ball bearing or a marble rolling back and forth.

I have the same thing on my Countryman, it's the speedometer. It happens (to me) from 15mph-0mph. I asked my SA an he said he had received an e-mail from MINI saying that it only happens to car with the screen (nav/connected) and that they do not have a solution for it... I can can confirm that it happens only on cars with the screen as my other Countryman has the regular speedo and it doesn't make any sounds.

Yeah, I finally nailed it down to something with the speedometer too.
From 10MPH down to 0 under anything other than the most gentle braking I hear the ball bearing noise.
Guess I'll just wait to see if anyone finds a solution and maybe mention it to the SA if I have another reason to stop in.

Bumping this thread. Anyone else having this issue? It's driving me nuts and I can't take my car to the dealer yet. I have nav as well.

I have this sound on my CM, it was also on the loaner CM I got at one time (with a later build date than mine). I think all of them have it.

I was gonna mention it if my loaner car didn't have it.

I have the same problem. I can live with it for now. Don't want to take it in, fearing they might do something worse.

+1 - I have the Nav/Connected. I can live with it because the car is so much damn fun to drive. But it should not exist in a so called premium car at this price point.

I have the same noise and NAV. I came to the conclusion it's not just when breaking from 10mph to 0, but when I fully stop before center speedo goes to zero. Someone previously said something similar that the noise only stopped under gentle breaking. I don't have a solution, but half the battle is figuring how/when these noises occur. To be fair, with my HK on I don't really hear it.

I have this *exact* same problem on my 2011 JCW with Navi.

Thank you for this thread, I thought I was going crazy. I hear the same "ball bearing rolling around" noise described above when I brake and accelerate, or turn at low speeds. This is only one of several noises/rattles the car makes. Rather disappointing.

Your cars are still under warranty. The dealer should be fixing them.

Just went to my dealership and spoke to someone in service. I asked if they could check if this was an issue that MINI knows about and has a fix for, because I'd rather not have them take apart and reassemble my dash (which will only wear the plastic parts and potentially introduce more rattles) if they don't even know what's wrong.

He said the only thing I could do was bring the car in tomorrow morning and they would check it out. Kind of not convinced that anything productive is going to result from this, and kind of not looking forward to having my entire dash taken apart and put back together.

:\

Please keep us updated on what the dealer says. It will surely help us all get this solved.

I brought my car in the following morning, and they checked if there was any bulletin on the issue I was having. I was informed that there was not, and that they would need my car for 2-3 days to take apart/reassemble the dash and *maybe* find the issue.

I've decided to wait until MINI has more info on this before I subject my car to that with no guarantee that anything will be fixed. I would be very interested to find out this was a loose wire harness. I've been paying closer attention to the noise, and I'm beginning to think it has something to do with the mechanism that actuates the speedometer, specifically between 0-10mph.

I'm experiencing the same noise coming from the center speedometer area. And you're right about it happening between 0-10 mph. I usually notice it the most when decelerating to a stop. I haven't brought it to my dealer's attention just yet, making a note of some other noise issues...

Add another MCS w/Connected to the list of having this exact issue... Have been living with it until this month when I took it in for an oil change.
From the Repair Order - C/S Rattle in center of dash, happens when coming to a slow stop....
The "correction" statement (from the RO) - "Upon inspec found that rattle was internal noise from tach normal operation no further action taken"
Anyone listening to the noise - obviously NOT from the tach area and specifically from the speedo area....
My comment to the Service Advisor: "that will not be acceptable" - so we scheduled a time when the shop manager can review the issue (he was on vacation) appointment is Thursday...

Sorry - my bad as I thought I had posted the attached right after getting the car back.
Bottomline - MINI says that the rattle is "normal operation" and that correcting (attempts to rectify) the problem is "not possible"...

In my case, the dealership has been great about researching it - and I have no issue now with how the dealer has approached this. I have not decided whether this bothers me enough to get into a discussion about it with MINI...

Thanks for the update.

Let's see what they say when I take mine in for a service in two weeks time.
