Silicone Seal for Valve Cover Replacement

Hi all,

Does anyone have a diagram for or experience with the valve cover replacement for the 2012 R60? I have the new cover ready to go. I read on another thread about having to use silicone sealant. That user mentioned it all around the cover. Another thread on another site mentioned the manual only states near the "half moon" section to the left.

Any recommendations on the silicone seal and if it's needed throughout even though there is a rubber gasket that covers the entire perimeter?

Thanks

Chris

Manual says to apply it all around. But I don't see a need, so I just did places where the gasket bends.

Thanks for that. That makes sense to me. So probably at the corners and the dip at the "half moon" bump.

Does that manual cover the 2012 R60 S as well?

From my own experience, no silicone seal needed. Very important is to torque bolts and do it in a correct order

This is great. Thanks!!

I guess this also begs the question...would adding any sealant do any harm or would it just be more than necessary?

It would only cause harm if you used too much and it oozed into the cam area and clogged the oil passages

I just had to do mine on a 2013. I hadn't read about using silicone and thus did not. It's early on, but mine is not leaking without any additional sealant.

Yep, dealers dont use it, they use some red tack spray on the head connection. Thats what they did on my n14 MCS valve cover when replaced under warranty. I done two other valve covers myself. 1. TQ like the pattern above. 2. just make sure the surface on the head is clean and no gunk build up. Wipe with a clean towel and dont let gunk or dirt get into the engine head while cleaning.

All great tips! Thanks to everyone. This place never disappoints and always generous with information. Does anyone have a specific high temp silicone they like to use? I may just place it on the half moon bend part. But only a thin amount.

Not sure if this the correct place to post this and I understand that this thread is a bit old. I just replace my valve cover and it started leaking from the PVC gasket. Not sure what it actually called but its not the membrane. I have included a image below.
