R60 2014 Countryman R60 rear tow bolt thread?
2014 Countryman R60 rear tow bolt thread?
Hello, would anyone know the bolt thread for the rear tow hook points, please? Trying to install a little rear bumper protection for the crazy parallel parkers of New York. Many thanks!!
I believe the tow bolt that fits is a Metric 16 -3 thread and/or ACME 5/8" - 8tpi thread. They are very close to each other in size and they are a bit of an oddball thread. I believe it was designed that way so that only a proper tow hook can be installed. You might find such a thread in a bolt & nut specialty shop or you might have to find a machinist to cut one for you.
The duck tape solution might sound good after a while....

I had read somewhere that it's a Acme 5/8" - 8 thread, so I bought the big bolts. Turns out, they are so small in the hole they slip right in. So it's definitely much larger, whatever it is.
I'll see if enigmaintx can post the width of the bolt.

Width of that bolt?
Hope this helps. I have a license plate holder that screws into the front tow hook point. The measurement on the tape measure is in inches.

I too wondered this question when I was designing a gopro tow-hook mount. I ended up just measuring the stock hook and replicating the thread in solidworks. I then printed a few different variations on my 3d printer and got what I liked. In the end I bought the mount from CravenSpeed as they spent the time to make and market a product and I didn't want to rip them off.
In the end, nothing you buy will be an exact fit in my experience.

I won't repeat here the words I used after they gave me that answer...
tow hook-thank you!
Wow, I never knew that. One month in, finally I find the tow hook location. No jack or wrench though, being run flats I guess. Thank you!!
Thanks everyone. I will try for the same, seems like they really don't want to make it easy for us. TJank pointed out the location of the tow hook, which I never discovered until now, one month into ownership. If i figure it out, I will certainly share here. Much obliged!
I took a measurement of the diameter and it looks like 3/4".

Cheers!

2013 + Countryman and Paceman don't come with any tools anymore. I even complained to Mini Canada about it and their answer was that it's not part of the car anymore.

I also asked about a jack when I picked up mine. Same response. With the run flats tires Mini stopped providing a spare tire, a jack, the 12volt air compressor, or any tools but I did receive the tow hook which they use for shipping. The 2014 manual even stopped showing how to change a tire or the lug nut torque specs which are found in the 2013 manual.
Here's a size comparison. I still think it's an M20x3, the tow hook on the left you see is from eBay, showing supposedly BMW fit. The actual part number you need, based on RealOEM, is BMW/Mini part code "BMW E84 E89 F01 F11 F20 F25 & MINI R60 R61 TOWING EYE NEW GENUINE Oem # 72157184971". Also the ones from Amazon look like that on the left. So, I think we are out of luck unless we order them especially.

Aha! So that's why my wife's 2013 Countryman that we bought used this summer doesn't have a tow hook. I thought the previous owner had nicked it / lost it.
