I put 12.2 gals in on Thursday, I had just hit the final red bar. Tank was full, all bars lit over to the little dot, and stayed that way for about 50 miles.

If I stop filling the first time the pump shuts off, the last candy corn won't be lit or will go off after a couple miles. I usually top it off once and it's fine. There's definitely something weird about the tank.

i have seen other posts similar to this ... the problem was a blocked/defective tank vent if i recall properly

i don't have the problem myself, all the bars always light and i usually get 75 miles until the first bar goes out

I have had the same issue since the first time I filled up the tank. I've learned that after the auto stop on the pump handle shuts off, I have to top off the tank with about 1/2 to 3/4 gal more to get the fuel gauge to read full. Normally, the auto industry tells you not to top off your tanks, forget the reason. My "arm- chair view" is that the full tank design doesn't conform to the pump handle design. When I pay for a full tank, I want to see a full reading gauge.

Like bmwr606, I have never had a problem with the gauge showing full. Of course, I do follow the instructions in the manual:

So, for me, I let the pump click-off then wait about 10 seconds for the last bit of fuel to clear the filler pipe. Then I add more gas until a second click-off, wait a few more seconds, then fill until the final click-off.

Always had the full compliment of candy corns and no spillage.

i just now got back from filling my tank

after the auto shut off, i waited a bit and pumped .2 gals until it auto shut off, waited and pumped a third time, adding an additional .1 gal

after the third shut off, the fuel was visible in the neck as i removed the nozzle

all lights on, as normal for my car

I live in the UK & drive the 1.6 Cooper D & I get about 60 uk miles before full light extinguishes.. i fill to the first click / shut off. I would assume you have a blocked vent.

Good luck and hope you get a quick fix

Crazy, I didn't realize the manual recommends two top offs. I did read most of the manual but figured there wasn't anything to learn on that topic.

I'll give that a shot. The first top off usually adds about .6 gal for me.

Interesting thread as our 2013 CM does the same thing. And yes, I'm guilty of not checking that part of the manual either. I'll try the recommended "top off" next time we fill the tank. Thanks.

I usually stop after the first click and I get all lights on my fuel gauge. I get 31 miles before the first light goes off every time.

I don't know what the manual recommends, but I've always done 2-3 topoffs after it clicks. These pumps are screwed up trying not to let gas fumes into the atmosphere by preventing nearly a gallon of gas getting in. In my bike, which only holds 6 gallons to begin with, that is nearly 17% of the capacity!

I'll do the same with my Mini when it arrives.

I recall that not long ago someone here posted that they were having trouble with the evaporative emission control system on their car, and the dealer would not cover the problem under warranty because they said that it was due to the gas tank being overfilled. I don't recall what ended up happening to that particular owner in the end, but everyone needs to be cognizant that you can damage your car from overfilling.

Btw, Our gauge always seems to reach full even if we don't top off after the pump shuts off the first time.

Strange, I haven't had this problem.

I did have it in my rogue though.

I call BS on that. I've driven over 600,000 miles in 5 cars (210K in my 98 Audi A4) and that doesn't count my wife's vehicles, and I fill every one the same way.

I've probably saved having to get a few hundred fillups over my life with those incremental half-gallon addins.

Yes, I have never heard of this on any other model car either, but I also never seen the type of warning in the owners manual of any other car either, including our 2003 MCS.

Perhaps it's unique to the specific way the evaporative emissions control is designed on the Countryman? If you think about how an evaporative emissions control system operates, You can sort of understand how overfilling tank could flood and damage the system. But it's pretty much like you would have to so grossly overfill the tank to the point you were purposely trying to damage the system. Perhaps it's merely a convenient way for Mini to blame a design problem on the operator?....sort of like the widespread clutch issues on pre 2013 awd cars.

I had the same problem, it happened more at the BP station near work then at other stations.
When I complained to Mini they fixed the issue. Never went away 100% Once in a while it showed one candy corn came up short on fill up.

My '98 A4 manual says the same thing. So does every gas pump and I think most filler doors on cars. I pay as much attention to it as I do the speed limit signs.

And I run with scissors!

The answer!!!

Folks, I'm surprised no one else has come up with this answer. I pick up my Countryman S tomorrow but I have been reading extensively so I know everything about the car from the start!

Page 201 of the 2013 manual:

"The fuel tank is full when you top off twice after
the first time that the fuel pump nozzle clicks off."

So if you're topping off, you're doing it RIGHT! In fact, you should do it ONE MORE time!

Nice find, funny because on other models , they state do not top off as it might get fuel in the charcoal filter, emissions stuff.

Must have a different fuel system in the R60 set up.

No way! I just got my Countryman and have noticed this the last few times I have filled up. It never happened in my R56 so I was beginning to become slightly worried. Good find!
