Drivetrain ECU Tune - Best Mod Yet? Yup!
scott
Basically I'm wondering about torque steer or traction loss/wheel slip on takeoff. You hear a lot about torque steer or the electronic traction control having to engage because the weight gets transferred to the rear as you accelerate, etc. Just wanted to know if you found yourself losing traction or getting torque steer on aggressive starts, etc.
Jerry,
I've been following the thread on NAM for tuning the N18 engine. It looks like you've had success tuning the N18s built before 02/2012, at which time MINI added some sort of encryption to the ECU. Have you gotten around that yet? If not, do you have an ETA?

Not yet Ben... :-(
Sorry man...

Hujan, head to LA and maybe Farzaan and those guys have a local dyno hookup? I mean, they deal fast luxury all around...so it's worth checking out.
So, can I get the tune through HG Motorsports without having to ship the ECU?
Yes, HG Motorsports will do the tune for you at their facility the same day.
Go see Chris and he will take care of you.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

basically i was told that to "protect the secrets of the tuning process" all ECU tuning was done in the florida shop
some of the renntech tunes on earlier model cars are done via the OBD2 port, maybe those are done locally?
when i called, we were specifically talking about my 03/2012 build N18 motored CMS All4

If I have to send the ECU to Florida and drop an additional $350 on the tune, it makes the decision to go with ETG pretty easy. Especially because the cost of shipping the ECU was not included in the $945. (At least that's what they told me, but we all know how reliable that is.)
Man, that is weird! We were also talking in terms of my 04/2012 build N18 because that is one of the first questions I had for him. I believe you, and I know I'm telling the truth, so the culprit must be some confusion/misinformation from RennTech. Weird stuff.

i was told i pay shipping to renntech and they pay shipping back
scott
Maybe the explanation is that they have some authorized dealers they trust with their tunes?
Cool. Let me know. They told me the same re: shipping (I pay to ship to them, they pay to ship back) until they found out I was in San Diego and then said I could get the tune at the shop.

i will post the reply to my email
scott
got an email fired off to renntech with very specific questions about pre/post 03/2012 ECU and where the tunes are done
i also asked about other mods and the tune, ie exhaust, downpipe, CAI etc
breathing into a brown paper bag waiting for the response

So unfortunately we can't tune the car in-house. We are however an authorized dealer of RENNtech and thus we can take care of you. We send out the ECU and have it back to us in 3 days ready to go.
he says that if the ecu can't be tuned via the obd port, they probably have to open the ecu, remove a chip from a circuit board in the ecu and use an eprom or eeprom burner to change the parameters on the chip
that would explain the "kiss your warranty goodbye" statements and would also preculde a "remote tune"
he said some of the early aftermarket racing engine management systems worked this way, they came with an (optional) eprom/eeprom burner so you could tune the system
current racing systems have a port to connect a pc for tuning

EDIT: NO REPLY TO MY EMAIL TO RENNTECH YET
Hi everyone,
I have been reading and watching everyone here on NAM for the past 10 months now. I have not updated my profile or anything yet but will soon. So here it goes. I'm new to threads etc so excuse me if I'm not too saavy on the etiquette. I wanted to get to the skinny on the tune for the countryman as I did mine a few days ago with NM. I have a 2012 Countryman ALL4 S. Build date is Jan. 2012. I am located in the LA area and got the tune directly with NM. I was nervous at first being I have never done something like this before. Glad I did because the car feels like it's at home.
Just wanted to let everyone know that there's one more All4 that got the NM tune. I would def reccomend NM over all the others due to their expertise and knowledge. They're also a subsidiary of Neuspeed which is huge in the VW world. the NM shop is part of/same as the Neuspeed shop in Camarillo, Ca

Any thoughts on how the car drives now compared to prior the ecu tune?
just got confirmation from renntech, they can tune both versions of the ECU used in the countryman
all tunes are done at their headquarters, must ship ECU to them
i also got a phone number and invite to call to discuss other mods (exhaust, CAI, FMIC etc etc) in conjunction with the ECU tune
i will call tomorrow

Big difference. Throttle response is quicker and the turbo spoils up quicker as well. Witt the SB on its major difference. Only issue is that I can feel it struggling for air. I have no other mods yet just the tune but I can feel it needs more air. Hoping intake and exhaust will help it breathe better. Other than that I recommend it. Getting a little better mpg's as well.
