Question Mounting Radar Detector on Dashboard Vent

Hi folks,

I have a Roadster with an Escort 9500ix radar detector all nicely hard-wired in. I live in California and mounting accessories to the windshield is illegal so I have the detector attached to a beanbag dashboard mount (
Amazon.com: Heavyweight Beanbag Dash & Windshield Mount for Bel Whistler Escort Uniden Cobra Rocky Mountain & Other Brand Radar Detectors: Everything Else Amazon.com: Heavyweight Beanbag Dash & Windshield Mount for Bel Whistler Escort Uniden Cobra Rocky Mountain & Other Brand Radar Detectors: Everything Else
). The only appropriate place for this on the dash is right over the center vent, partially obstructing it. This works fine most of the time, but during intense cornering it will sometimes slide out of place across the dash to one side. I think the friction of the dashboard mount is less on the vent since there is very little surface contact than it would be on a normal, flat dashboard.

Thus, I have a partially obstructed vent and a radar detector that needs to stay steady. If you're thinking like I am, wouldn't it be great if I could clip the radar detector to the vent? However, I cannot for the life of me find a mount online that does this. It seems like that center vent should provide plenty of opportunities to attach some kind of strong clip, or even an object which has weighted parts hanging down between the slats of the vent, and the connection options to the radar detector seem numerous; it could attach to the bottom of the detector, or if the clip was connected to an arm that went up around the side and to a flat panel facing downwards, I could use the radar detector's windshield attachment to connect to the underside of that panel.

Does anyone know of some kind of mount that would attached the radar detector to this center vent, or maybe even some company/person who makes custom mounts? There must be an elegant way to manage this.

Thanks so much in advance!

Haha that might hold, however if possible I would prefer a solution that doesn't permanently damage the car; ideally everything can be removed later with no residue or marks left behind. I also would like the detector to be removable for when I'm leaving it parked with the top down; my dashboard mount attaches to the detector with velcro, and the windshield mount that it comes with is meant to detach for the same purpose.

Maybe you can modify a vent air freshener clip or a vent mount cell phone clip?

I have been driving for 40 years and have never needed a radar detector.

Yeah I think that might be my best fallback option, I saw that Escort makes this mount for cell phones: https://www.escortradar.com/store/sm...ent-mount.html One thing to look out for is the mount will need to not obstruct the front or back of the detector, which is why the dashboard mount I have right now has a flat panel on top where the radar detector sits.

Ideally I could find something purpose-built but if not, modifying another vent-mounted clip is probably a good choice.

Velcro to the rescue!

On my R56 and R60 I used commercial velcro (you can get it at HD). Fuzzy side on top of the vent, hooks on the bottom of my 9500ix. No issues at all.
