R59 Clear wind deflector?
Clear wind deflector?
Hi All,
Has anyone seen a clear polycarb wind deflector for the Roadster to replace the factory mesh one? That mesh is a bit difficult to see through and, while folding it down helps, a clear one would just be better (ala Boxster).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Franny

Hey guys - see my thread from a while back. It has a link to a plexiglass deflector I found on another forum.

To be honest the mesh doesn't really bother me that much. I'm driving around right now in the yucky weather we're having with the top up and the deflector still in place. I find at night that it even helps a bit sometimes if there's a tall car behind with high headlights, it seems to take the sting out of them in the rear view mirror.
To do a clear deflector right I think it needs to be in three pieces: one that fits where the factory one does, and two optional ones to fill the roll hoops if people find those a problem. I don't think I need the roll hoops filled, I have my seat a fair way back (6'0") and the headrest fills the hoop pretty well at the height I have it.
It would make it more difficult for me to reach back and pull the top up (manual top here...), but I only rarely do that in places where I can't stop and get out anyway. Maybe someone could find a way to replicate a hinge mechanism in Lexan/perspex so it still works like the factory one? Or maybe just take the factory one, remove the mesh and replace it with Lexan? It would be an expensive experiment though, the factory ones go for about $200: http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-24...-bmw-part.aspx
I just read all the replies to that post on zroadster.net, looks like someone complained that a large, solid deflector like that causes a vortex effect. This is something I have heard before but didn't believe. Perhaps it is true.
What started me on this journey was a complaint from my girlfriend (isn't this how all journey's begin?) that she couldn't see through the mesh when it was up, or down. Maybe a solution is to cut the mesh out of the bracket and replace it with perspec cut precisely to match and held in with some sort of clear sealant (like on windows). I would also glue the hinge closed.
