R59 Mini Roadster vs Miata
I finally ordered my Roadster two weeks ago. I compared lots of cars of all kinds (not just convertibles) including the Miata. What sold me on the Roadster in the end was the gas mileage and the number of options. Other cars out there just couldn't compete.
It's silly but I will admit it but the rarity also appeals. To and from the farmers market last week (about 20 miles each way), I saw five Miatas. And much as I like Hardtops, they are ubiquitous. Mine's due in November and I'm really hoping to NOT spot one before it arrives.

MINI S Roadster VS Miata Grand Touring PRHT
This was my wife's 2007 Miata which she traded in for a 2011 MINI Cooper.

This is my new 2013 MINI Cooper S Roadster

This was my 2005 Jeep Rubicon...... (Just for comparison)

So my point is:
1. I love soft tops and will put the top down to the edge of comfort.
2. These are 3 very different vehicles
3. It all depends what you want your car to do....
In my experience the Miata is the most fun car I have ever driven, hands down. Even though the MINI has more power and beat the Miata in a straight line The Miata with the right high performance tires and wheels will give you the most incredible ride on twisty country roads. Oh Yea the Rubicon can climb up tall buildings if I asked it to, at a cost of 16MPG, the cornering of a boat and a 0-60 split of 20 years.
I like tons of things about each of these vehicle and they all have faults so here are my top 3 issues with each.
1. If you are taller than me 5'10" with short legs, you won't fit well in the Miata
2. If you are looking for sports car ride/handling the MINI is lacking a bit.
3. If you do a lot of highway driving the Rubicon is not for you.
What the heck the best part is they are soft tops and there is noting like a roadster when you are driving on a nice comfortable road soaking up the sun and stars......
