(Speculation) How the 3rd gen (14) effects the R58/R59

In all likelihood MINI will introduce the 3rd generation (late) next summer as a 2014. How is MINI going to handle the replacement order change over?

1: 14-R56/R55 (maybe), 15-R57, 16-R58/R59
2: 14-R56/R55/R57, 15-R58/R59
3: 14-R56/R55/R57/R58/R59

I think #1 seems the most plausible to give the R58/R59 a 4 year run (the R58 could have been introduced as a 13 but this would have further shortened it's cycle). This would also allow MINI more time to retool for each change. Downside is the R58/R59 will (likely) have inferior engines/suspensions/amenities.

#3 seems the least likely since it would require the most tooling work. Also it would leave the R58/R59 as a 2 year only run (and just over 1 year availability for the R59) . It would also quickly "outdate" a R59 car purchase and lower vales a little.

It seems to add an enigma element in choosing to buy a R58/R59 at this time.

I think #1 is most likely.. i'm guessing the roadster will hold its value as i doubt there will be nearly as many around as the other models.

You'll want to read-up over on the MotoringFile website to get you up to speed:
* http://www.motoringfile.com/2012/01/...ails-revealed/
* http://www.motoringfile.com/2011/07/...ed/#more-18787

Also, the 3rd-Gen will be the "F"-platform:
F56 = hatchback III
F55 = Clubman II
F57 = convertible III
F60 = Countryman
F62 = Traveller

I was using the current designations for replacement. I didn't know that MINI would keep the same numbers and just change the Letter (chassis designation).

A couple of musings about the 1.5L/3 cylinder. 3 cylinders are inherently unbalanced and cause vibrations. Although Ford has a new one that seems to have suppressed the vibration problem (according to a couple of reviews I read) without using heavy balance shafts. Also if MINI uses a scaled 4 cylinder for the JCW it would be 2L and 240HP (without modifications). This is a lot for FWD and would lead to excessive torque steer. Wonder if there would be a chance of the next JCW having AWD? I now it will add about 150lbs but would probably be worth it especially if we get closer to 260 to 275HP.
