my 07 S also had 16's
I had 17's on my 02 ... those were included in an option package
in the day the 'justa had 15's as OE and the S 16's ..... as I recall .....
so far as the 'look' .... IME: when you went to the larger wheel, they installed a lower sidewall profile tire .... the overall diameter of the wheel/tire combination didn't change as much as you might envision and folks who did not understand what was going on complained about a hard ride ..... duh .... still happens today, every day. 16's allow a taller sidewall (even with run flats) and a taller sidewall means a 'softer' ride ... but your tire "picture" is less "cool" (wanna guess what a Caddie SUV on 21 inch rims and super low profile tires rides like. I expect they take detours to avoid speed bumps!!!!!)
Tire Rack has a tool that lets you play with your car and various wheel and tire combinations for looks ....

Same here, it's a bit on the harsh side over bumps. I'm used to it though and it's sweet on smooth pavement.

I will probably replace the OEM tires with non run flats because there are more tread pattern choices and you do better get a better ride quality. I did that with my wife's 2012 Countryman and it made a huge difference in ride and you didn't feel like the car was leaving the pavement when hitting expansion joints on a curve😁

16" are pretty nice for the ride and we have a couple sets left of the 16" R90's on sale with free ship. We also found they fit the Cooper and Cooper S brakes. If you have JCW brakes or larger aftermarkets they will not fit. I had 16" and they do have a better ride than the 17". And you dont have to worry about curbing them or hitting bumps and bending a wheel with the larger sidewalls.

16" is the default size I believe. When I got the sport package on my previous R56, it bumped the wheels size to 17s. My R58 is the base model and came with 16s, which I will replace with 17s when the tires wear out.
If you have a harsh ride on 17s, it's the runflats, which are terrible vs standard tires. Two things I will never get on a Mini again:
-Runflat tires
-Automatic climate control

Yes, the 15" will fit the Cooper, the S will need 16" factories.
