The MINI is very hard on tires. With 30k miles on a used car there is a chance the car is on it's original tires and/or the previous owner did not rotate the tires every 5k miles like you'll see recommended here to keep the tire wear even.
Both would result in a louder ride.
That said I found my old Gen1 R53 to be louder than my wife's Audi A4.
I can't really comment on the Gen2s as I have the roadster, but I don't recall the loaner cars to be "loud."
I have a JCW on sport suspension and runflat tires with 39k miles. I personally don't find it noisy, and the noisiness from the front end died down some after I installed the GP2 undertray. That being said, my only point of reference is a 2008 R56 that had 100k miles on it by the time I got out of it and it had a faulty sunroof seal, so wind noise was quite prevalent.
Check the tires for cupping and uneven tire wear, if the tire were not rotated or the alignment was off from the factory the tires can get really loud, especially runflats.
I've only had my Coupe 2 days but noticed same thing. It's the runflats. Had same issue on my vette. Get rid of the run flats when they wear out and carry slime flat repair or use ride-on.
I just test drive it today and feel really noisy and pumping, with almost 30k miles used car, are they just normal?
What tires are on your R58? When the car has sat for a while, the tires will thump for a while, until they warm up. Takes the tire a little longer to smooth out when it's really cold out. If they keep thumping all the time, they have a flat spot or a structural problem.
There are good quiet tires out there for our Minis. I still have the original run-flat Continentals that came on my car and noticed that they are quite noisy on most pavement types, other than the smoothest blacktop or super slab/smooth concrete. They were rotated at 5,000 miles and have no cupping or other deformities, so it's just the tire. As soon as the tires get close to worn, I'll switch away from the run-flats.
Good quality, well balanced new tires on a newly aligned Mini will make a big difference. Change the oil and rotate the tires at 5,000 miles. Minis like that a lot.
I've never really paid attention to it as the whole car is noisy. You gotta remember, you've got a giant empty space right behind your head without much sound deadening. I did a 130MPH run before trading mine in and at that speed it was mighty loud. My car had non-run-flats and it was lowered.

There are lots of non run-flat tires out there that are or can get very noisy as they wear. Tires generally get noisier as they wear down toward the wear bars. Tires can make a big difference in any car. We have a Prius that came with Yokohama Avid Ascend tires. Prius is not known for being insulated from noise and these tires added a lot of noise to the mix, especially as they wore down. We got 53k out of those tires, with no problems. They stayed round, wore evenly and handled really well on the highway, dry or wet, down to the wear bars. No flat spots or feathering of the edges. But the tires were just noisy.
We knew a ways out that new tires would have to be bought eventually, so looked and researched a long time, and replaced with a set of Pirelli Cinturato P7 Plus and what a difference that made inside the car. We have over 15k on these. Still quiet, roll comfortably and handle really nicely for an all season. We even ordered them V rated to keep efficiency up. Can't say enough about these tires. We take long trips in this car... the improvement on the highway is a quantum step up all around.
When I had a vette many years ago it came with Michelin Run flats. Back then only they and Bridgestone had them.
Hated them. Road like the Continentals, thumpy and loud.
Put the Bridgestone RF on and huge difference. Much better.
However still not as comfortable as a regular tire. My next set on the 58 will probably be a decent Tour/performance tire, no low profile since I don't race it, simple push it time to time.
Older the tires the noiser it is common to hear them.
I find the R58 average in road noise with the conti run flats.

I have Dunlop run flats and I agree with your comment. This is average and not disturbing about road noise.
I will buy a new set of tires soon but I don't know for now. It is pretty muddy and slippery here from time to time and I am wondering if I should keep winter tires all year around or go with a good all season tread.
dube, if you ever want to discuss tire optioins I suggest you call Tire Rack and ask for Alex. He has been working with MINIs since I bought my first in 2003. He has also been a big contributor to the tire thread on this website.
I know Broadspeed was really noisy with the factory Bridgestone RFTs, but she improved significantly after I swapped over to the Michelin Super Sports and added quite a bit of sound deadening foam wherever I could (even against the roof, which made a bit of a difference). I've got the GP2 belly pan and the underside panels on order from my dealer, and with luck adding those three parts to the underside of the car will further reduce the noise (and make her a bit more aerodynamically efficient).
And my R58S has none of the panels, so it's pretty loud. With luck the front and side panels will reduce it to the point where I won't be bleeding from the ears after an eight-hour road trip. I wish I could install the rear diffuser too, but then I'd have to get a JCW rear bumper first. Maybe later, but not right now.
Yea, only the R58 S w/ JCW body kit have the center panels or the Factory JCW cars. Its the next step for me as i have the middle and the front belly panel kit.
