R58 Base Model Cooper Modifications
Base Model Cooper Modifications
Anyone have suggestions to get a little more out of the engine for the base model Cooper R58? I recently purchased one instead of the S because it was within my budget range, but now i'm looking to improve it some. I've already installed the ddm air intake. I was curious of what was next? Most of the sites I have found are for the S models. Thanks guys.
Yes I always do Handling first. I'm on NM springs, but I'm looking to get KW B Specs next. Since the B Spec series is non s that is probably a great place to research what they are using. I just told you what suspension they use.
Non S upgrades
Not sure what year you have but if you have a 2011 and later, it is a direct replacement to put an S grille on the car. Also can change the gas door to one that has the exposed chrome cap like on the S.
On mine I have changed to S model grille, replace third red brake light with a white on like on the S. Mine is a clubman. Replaced the two dash panels that came standard grey with ones off S model ie machined aluminum and door handles to match. Changed to 16 inch rota wheels and replaced the standard DRLS with ones that are Fog and have angel eyes.

The first and best bang for the buck mods for a Cooper non S R58 is
DDM Cooper Intake

whoneyc2 - An intake might get you an extra pony, but mostly you will get noise. The Torque arm bushing will gain you NVH. If it was my money I'd spend it on suspension mods. That would be money well spent.

Haha thanks guys. I'll look into it. The ddm air intake, I already purchased. Let me tell you... it does change the noise and makes it sound a bit meaner. Increases the throttle response... slightly. Dyno sheets say it adds approximately 5lbs of torque, yet in the end, its not entirely that noticable.

To be honest, the noise was a little louder than desired but mainly in second gear. Keeping RPM down and easier driving lessen it dramatically. As far as fuel consumption, only difference I noticed was when I had the pedal the floor. Before the worst I could get was about 12 mpg when flooring it, but I can get it down to like 8 or 9 now. Throttle response did increase. But it's a tiny difference. If you know your car well, it'll be a huge difference to you. Installation was surprisingly easy as heck. All in all. Pretty happy with it. Guys from the mini dealer in Charlotte, NC were in awe and wanted to drive it.
Oh, and this one comes with the k&n filter. I approached the shop guys at dealership with both intakes and they suggested the ddm one, and in being a brand new mini owner, I took their word for it.
