Panel filter ?

Has anyone upgraded there panel filter on a JCW Coupe? Do you need to remove the Sway bar to be able to open the box?
I saw some videos on youtube but the sway bar seems to be on the way in the JCW Coupe.

That's why this is a forum to learn. I was told by my MA that was a "stabilizer" bar that holds the car's frame to make it stiffer. Anyways it appears to go over the filter box.

Noob - Here to learn

So, about the panel filter, is there a benefit to getting an aftermarket intake, like the one below from ALTA, as opposed to just getting a drop in panel filter?

Also, is ALTA the brand of choice? Are there other brands that are competitively priced? Well liked? MINI tried and true?

Intake example: http://www.altaperformance.com/speci...-intake-system

Kind of hard to go wrong with a plain jane K&N filter, especially if you don't want to mod anything right away.

I have an S and my only mod has been an aFe dry drop-in filter....a slight bit of increased power with some added "growl". You need two allen wrenches sizes to open the box.

I had an Alta on my 2007S and it was great .... I am going to either go with the Alta again or go with NM engineering and the strut brace.

I did put a K&N filter in .. did not notice anydifference ... I think the Cold air intake will make a huge difference.

I haven't added one (yet) to my coupe, but with my truck you had to disconnect the battery to reset the computer to detect/adjust for the new filter. Did you do that when you installed yours?

Heads up, if you add an open aire filter you will most likely notice
a loss in low end torque.
That is what I and many have experienced. I had the NM intake on my Coupe, great intake and addicting sound of the DV. When compared with the stock intake, the power delivery is very linear(stock intake). With open intakes you'll notice the pull past 3k RPMS!

Stock intake(lots of pull on the low end...falls flat up top.

Open intake(feel it pull at 3K and up...not such grrat pull before that...but the sound is soooooo addicting)

As of now I just have a K&N drop in.

MarinePMI - you really do not need to pull the battery. The computer will figure it out.

NewCooperFanatic - I went with the Alta on my 2007 and did not notice a loss on the low end I only got gains all the way around. So maybe it was the NM intake? Dont know-- but I will most likely go with the alta again even though the NM has a more eye candy effect.

Keep in mind sound plays a big part in thinking you're going faster.

If you ever get the chance, use the open filter for some time, then put the stock back on....you'll notice the difference immediately.

An open intake is an open intake, foam or cotton gauze style.......with that, I say get the DDM Street intake. It's like 180 bucks and you get all the sounds! Same performance, lesser price!

well I had it dyno'd before and after.. and that is what I am basing it off of .. not "feeling"

its sort of funny what the dyno does to the mini computer .. I think I gave it an episode lol.

If you want a panel filter both the K&N filter and the Afe filters are good.

If you want to step up to an intake don't spend a bunch, go with the DDM street intake.

You dynoed your car for a filter?

Doesn't matter, to each their own.

But save some money and get the DDM Street Intake! You can even add the DDM hood scoop later on if you want.

If I ever did it again, I would go with the DDM.

I had a buddy at a shop and he was curious to see if there was a difference and there was in total HP and response time. Pulled out the Turbo muffler and put on the Alta air filter--so we wanted to see what the differences were, and it was free.

I would go with Alta http://www.altaperformance.com/coupe...-intake-system

Gotcha, must be cool to have access to a dyno!

Looks like you made up your mind, enjoy the sounds, I know I miss them.

Just keep in mind you save $60 and get the exact same performance.

That's a tank of gas, or the NM insert etc....

oh I agree.. the only thing I dont like about the DDM is that shield-- I like the open air design. Bottom line foam filters are pretty much the same. What I usually do is to pull that air blocker (not sure what you call it) that black plastic piece in the front scoop so that the cold air can get in (in AZ we need all the air we can get). so when I see that shield I see it blocking air-- now this is just my assumption I have no data to back that up.

Kevlars are you sure you are looking at the DDM for a S and not a Justa. The justa has a panel on the top the one I saw for a S just had a heat shield on the bottom to keep the engine heat away from the filter so it is a "COLD" air intake.
