Removal of volume ****?

Gosh, I'm fulla' questions these days...

I have an idea for a mod, but wanted to know if anyone has removed the volume adjustment **** (the lower one) & put it back successfully, with no damage.
If so, is it an easy process & how would one go about removing it & putting it back?

Thanks again.

(I promise my last question of the week!)

Two things.

1. You can ask as many questions as you want. When we get tired we will just stop answering LOL. Seriously ask as many as you want.

2. Probably should have this moved to the Audio and Nav Section.

Now on to your question. The **** just pulls off but the control behind it is not just a volume control it is actually part of the stereo system head unit.

So what is it you are trying to do? We may be able to tell you if it can be done or not.

Thanks for the quick reply.
MY iPod charger is a stand that connects into the charger & in doing so blocks access to the volume ****, so I have to circumvent around the iPod to increase/decrease volume.
I had what I think is a brilliant idea: To attach the handle from an old school pencil sharpener (I'm a schoolteacher) so that handle is what I can use to control volume.

At first I thought I would simply screw to the front of the know, but then I thought that perhaps I could remove the **** & place the sharpener handle between the dash & **** & then put the know back on.
Does that make sense? Can you visualize what I'm talking about?

So you do not have the MFSW (multi function steering wheel) then.

Sounds like a great idea but I am not sure it is going to work. getting the sharpener handle to mount to the shaft is going to be difficult as it has threads in it and the shaft is also much smaller in diameter than that of the sharpener handle hole. There is also a trim ring around the volume **** that would be in the way.

I guess a small adapter could be made but that would probably cost a fair amount of money. But if you work a a school that has a metal shop they could probably make you something at little to no cost.

The other problem I see is that the volume know rotates more than 360 degrees and in that case i think you might even have more problems as it passed to the bottom of its rotation.

Good luck with your idea and let us know if you get something figured out.

Thanks for yet another quick reply.

The sharpener handle hole is a little more than a quarter inch wide; Is that too small?

Can I pop off the volume **** to see or is it not as easy as popping off & putting back on? Does one simply gently pull it off or is there a more productive method?

(& no, I don't have the MFSW as I don't Bluetooth & I didn't like the look of it)

Thanks again!

The volume **** on my 08 MCS pulls right off with little effort, leaving the shaft sticking out of the volume **** trim piece. Then you can compare the shaft to the hole in the pencil sharpener handle, which I suspect will be too large. Maybe you can fill the hole and drill it out to the right size for the volume know shaft. Good luck!

How about mounting a small pulley spool on the peg that the **** mounts to, then mount the **** on another spool and then use a small rubber band or buy a small belt?

Or, sell your mount and get one that works with the car.

I really don't mind having to go around the mount to the ****, I just thought this was a cool idea.
The mount itself is wonderful- great sound, charges the iPod, makes it easy to get to the Touch controls, etc.
This idea about the sharpener handle just seemed an epiphany & wanted to hear the thoughts of the smart folks herein on its workability.
Any more ideas, please feel free to post.
I'm gonna' play with it this weekend & let you guys know if anything comes of it...
Thanks!

The 1/4 inch hole is larger than the Volume shaft of the MINI. I ma not exactly shure what size it is but i would estimate about 1/8" diameter.

Just pull it off. It does take some effort though

personally i can not do with out the MFSW as it has volume controls, and controls the bluetooth phone functions. This way my hands are on the wheels as much as possible.

This is off the topic but I am curious since I don't know. Since you do not have the MFSW, do you have cruise control? If so, where are the controls for CC? Mine are on the MFSW.

But kinda on topic, like schatzy62, I like the radio volume on the MFSW and seldom touch the dash **** except to turn the radio off or on.

To get cruise control you have to have the MFSW.

AHA! I just assumed that the Mini came standard with cruise control - as do almost all cars today - because I did not order it. So...had I not ordered the MFSW, I would not have cruise...what a bummer that would have been. On a trip on the X-way, I always use cruise.

So, sweetestbaboon does not have cruise control.

Correct, and yes the MINI does NOT come standard with cruise control.
