Finally...an use for the Openometer :)

The OpenOne Challenge: http://www.theopenone.com/

Grand prize - a trip to the Mini factory in Oxford.

(via Motoring Files)

I am already level 1. Too bad my commute to work is so short, gotta make it up on the weekends.

Good luck everyone - may the most open one win.

Oh Well, I thought it could be something we could all benefit from. The Openometer that is. Like an engine temp gage that would fit in the housing or something.

In that case I would have written the topic as "Finally ....a serious use for the Openometer"

It's a shame that the picture you upload today is the baseline. I was thinking of uploading a picture with my Openometer showing 5 hours 45 minutes, but I guess it would be hard to justify going from 5 hrs to 91 hours in a month...

Hey Zanary, how long did it take for the website to update after you uploaded your photos?

Under 5 minutes. Each upload I think get's reviewed by a human for accuracy and also for cheating...

Imagine that. The top three are now all INTERCHANGE YELLOW. I've acculumated over an hour just today, and with another 30 minutes tomorrow morning, I'll be posting yet another 1 hr and 30 minutes... This morning, it was foggy as hell with a little mist, but topless is the only way to travel.

With the Mini being such a British icon, it's kinda strange that none of our friends across the pond have registered.

You know, I was thinking that the Openometer should spit out an encrypted set of numbers that when we entered into the web site will translate into the actual date/time, openmeter counts, milage counts, and VIN number. This way there can't be any cheating or there would be less photo taking. Alas, no such things exist, so the daily or weekly photos of our Openometer value begin.

In a perfect world, our Cabrio would have a Wifi receiver, and when it finds a hot-spot that it can connect to, it would make a Web Services call to MiniUSA, and upload the most current information to the web site in an encryped format. In this manner there's no chance of cheating, or altering the information, and best yet there's nothing to be done by us. We just log in and look at the web site to see where we are. Take it one step further, the curent GPS coordinates if you have NAVI will be uploaded, and on your map, you'll see all other Cabrio owners in the local vacinity...

We still can't get the Mini to auto fold in our mirror when we turn off the car, nor can we save our HD2 or HD2 station in the presets, so it's not likely we'll ever see a feature like that. One can dream.

The Openometer is not standard in the UK. It is a £115 option (almost $200 at current rates). How many of you would choose to spend an extra $200 just to get the Openometer?

Edit: it turns out that this is a MINIUSA promotion.

There is no way I will be able to win this thing. Since I have no daily commute.

I tried to register but was rejected because my 2009 Mini S does not come in Laser blue...according to the error message. Odd, it sure looks Laser blue.

I thought the on-board computer still orders the Openometer values even if you don't have that actual Openmeter analog gauge to the left of the speedo.

I wonder if they will give out the prizes for the month of July, if they did, I'd be a winner

Edit: Nope, looking through the official rules, the month runs til Aug 31st.

I was thinking the same thing as well, but ohh well. That means I have to drive topless a lot in the month of August.

I just checked the web site, and it's down for a scheduled maintenance. Strange, it's only been up for 48 hours, and they are already doing maintenance on it...

I hope they ask for VIN as a mandatory field, so they can map back actual Openmeter number to the cars sold.

I hear you. I have a daily commute but less than 9 miles roundtrip and that too I often bike (which in a way is top-down as well).

Plus I stupidly forgot to take a picture just before I went for a 2 hour top down driving on Monday

Cool gift. Mini does such a great job of marketing - it was a nice surprise to come home to a mini gift box.

Off topic: Can someone take some quick measurements of the Openometer for me? I'm making upgrade replacement lenses for the tach and speedo, and I'd also like to do it for the Openometer. This is what I'm working on: http://www.motoringunderground.com/f...ad.php?t=15022

I want to know the inner and outer diameter of the silver/chrome trim ring around the dial, and the overall diameter of the Openometer housing. Approximate measurements are fine; just eyeball it with a ruler.

Hmm... haven't got anything yet. Do you have to be within some rank to receive it ?

I'm only at 15 hours uploaded. So, I don't think so.
