It is aggravating that many dealers can not service what they sell. Blaming the radar detector is highly annoying, too.

Have you verified that the voice recognition button works? That would be my first guess. Sometimes we overcomplicate problems (2 hours on tech support to find out the reason your computer doesn't turn on is because it's not plugged in ). Anywho... hope you get the issue worked out.

Well, since it doesn't beep, obviously the button isn't working. The question is, is the button itself defective or is there some other problem? I will be bringing the car in this week for its 7 hour software download. Hopefully, that will fix it.

I dont think that it is a check box issue. I have tried everything. When I get into (SETTINGS) and go to (NAVIGATION) then check box (NAV VOICE INSTRUCTIONS ) I get a female American voice which says <CURRENTLY GUIDANCE IS NOT AVAILABLE> So I assume I will have to get some form of programming update.!

That only means you haven't programmed in a destination so the navigation system doesn't have anywhere to lead you.

I was playing around over the weekend and found that box and checked it off and then on again. I heard the voice tell me the same thing. My navigation system and the voice recognition system work fine, other than it sometimes doesn't understand a word I use, such as $&()*#@! or &&**#@$!!

Hey guys, It looks like most of you are still waiting on the infinite wisdom of the service dept.
Well I have an update to this issue. I dropped of my Cooper S last night for the famous software upgrade. Today I received a call from the head service guy telling me that after they proceeded with the upgrade the Car asked them for a unique activation number that only mother factory issues. So they had no way to anticipate the delay he said and apologized... Blah blah blah.... All of that to say that I have to wait till latter tomorrow to get my "little rocket" back. That is right, that is her name.
So in conclusion I hope that this update on the Voice Command saga informs you somewhat.

Quick question, I have 550 miles on mine and I went ahead and changed my oil. Am I being paranoid? 12000 miles seem so far far away for a scheduled oil change.

I'm picking my car up tomorrow. How do you quickly check whether Voice Recognition is working? The NAV doesn't seem to be covered in the downloadable manual.

Just press the voice command button next to the phone button and you should hear an audible prompting followed by an icon on the screen. You must have convenience package to get VC.

Is it possible to get the Nav w/out the multifuction steering wheel? The VC is a standard button on the MF Steering Wheel, it's not tied to the convience package. The bluetooth voice control is tied to it, but that's because the bluetooth is part of the package (and also available seperatedly as well).

Robin,

Because you have the navigation system, you will receive an expanded owner's manual that includes a section for that.

To do a quick test, press the button on the left side of the steering wheel that looks like the profile of a person. After pressing the button, wait a moment and you should hear a tone.

At that point, say the word "radio." If it's working correctly, the radio should turn on and you should hear a man's voice say "radio on."

Just got a call from my service advisor. The software update took 6 hours, but voice recognition now works. I'm going to pick the car up tonight.

Hello everyone, same here my voice recognition is working now. I might say that it seams like they had no idea how to go about It. I am thankful they fixed it. Good luck to the ones still waiting.

Just picked up BludyL today! Yeah! But same problem for me. Unfortunately, my mini dealer is 35 miles away..., so I gotta go all the way back to get this fixed. Oh well.

For those how are fixed, would it be possible for you to let the forum know a little more detail, so we are equipped with the right information in dealing with our SAs? I understand that could be a skeptical bunch.

I'm guessing that's one of the differences between the dealers who let you take the car from them as soon as it comes off the truck and those that make you wait a few extra days.

My MA checked out everything on the car to make sure it was working properly before allowing me to come up and take it.

It would have only taken them a few seconds to determine whether the voice recognition system was working or not.

There is a 3-page checklist that they must complete, and then send the information to BMW (Called a "puma" case). This includes a check of the hard ware and wire connections. Once they have sent it in and verified the hard ware is good BMW will authorize the to do the software update that is the fix.

I am having the same problem with my 07 Mini - -I took delivery on 5/10/07 at Princeton Mini. Is that where you took your car for service??? I take mine in today and if that is where you took yours, maybe they learned something so mine won't be tied up so long. Yeah --right....
