Roofs insulated???

Are the roofs insulated at all? I was driving my girl's Cooper yesterday and it was raining cats and dogs. It sounds like a freaking tin can, super loud, enough that you have to raise your voice just a bit. It's a hollow tin can sound.

Hmmm... hard for me to tell. I have a sunroof.

I will say the headliner feels a bit thin. Well, maybe not thin, but lightweigt. I would guess there's not much up there, myself.

Turn the stereo up! Or go to Lowe's and buy some insulation and roll it up there. That'll look real different.

I will be pulling my headliner out when mine arrives, so I will be able to let you know then.

To match what you've done to your head waiting for your MINI?

I was in there when I was hard wiring my V1 there is not any insulation other than something that looks like cardboard. There was a lot of room in there.

Why are you pulling out your headliner, Skuzzy?

No wonder it's taking so long--the poor thing is scared to come over!

The shop foreman at East bay Mini told me yesterday that the tintops have a single piece of cardboard above the headliner and those with sunroofs have bugger all.

LOL LynnEl!

My primary reasons for pulling out the headliner is to look into adding some fiber optics to create Romi's (Andromeda) constellation. I want to have it just show up when it is dark, and be completely invisible when it is daylight.

I also want to see about adding other lighting for map lights and so on. Additional speakers for the HiFi system is something else.

Then I may want to add a drop down LCD panel I would use a couple of things.

And while I am there, I would take a look at the insulation. The roof is a large sheet of metal. Anytime you have a sheet metal panel that large, you have potential for all type of harmonis filtering into the cabin. A thin layer of urethane foam sprayed on will cure that and add mayne 6 to 8 ounces to the weight of the car.

I would be interested in how that goes Skuzzy. Maybe you could take some pics and give us a little DIY post.
I remember seeing some product used on Jeep Cherokees, it was a thin foam mat held down with glue. Thaey put it under the carpet in the storage area in the back. Might work even better than spray, less chance for overspray.

Oh, I plan on documenting it for all. The problem with any solid substance is the chance of it coming loose. The spray on urethane foam product I use will even adhere to an oil covered surface. Yes, one does have to be careful when applying it.

That is why I will simply gut the interior before I start the project. I suspect there are more areas I can add the damping material to.

When it dries, it is very stiff. I have used it before and it does an excellent job of killing high pitch sounds. It also seals the metal really well, preventing any type of direct moisture contact.

Oh now, come on. You of all people should understand she will want to look her best by the next MOTD, so she can strut her stuff. Dunt(tm) tell me you would not look forward to a day at the spa?

There are a lot of good things that come from better insulation. Properly done, it also helps improve the audio in the car.
