Fuel indicator problems?

Fill our 2007 MC with fuel on Saturday and it took 9.88 gallons with the car indicating that there was a half a tank. Has anyone experienced any problems with the like this? I am going to call my dealer and talk to a service advisor today.

Odd, I would have thought it should be at 1/4 in that scenario.

Cooper or Cooper S? That does seem off a bit. However, fuel indicators do not function linearly. To give drivers the impression they aren't guzzling gas, fuel gauges are designed to show more than you actually have for the first half, and then have to play catch-up for the second half so that it doesn't indicate you have gas, when you don't.

Most fuel gauges are like you say LynnEl.

However, at 9.8 gallons, there is less than 4 gallons left. That is a pretty good spread to only be showing 1/2.

By the way, the fuel gauge in my Lexus IS250 is perfectly calibrated. Each tick mark is actually 1 gallon of fuel. When it hits 'E', it is empty. Dunt(tm) ask.

I agree it does seem a bit off skuzzy. But with a 10.3 gal tank it is conceivable.

BTW, the capacities don't include the filler pipe.

From what I was told it has a large over flow tank. I filled my 10gal tank for the first time and was in shock when the pump was at 13+gals. At first I thought I was getting ripped of at the gas station.

What is nice about it is that you can fill it up all the way, drive 100 miles and still have a full tank of gas

LynnEl, I think that is a typo in the manual. As I understand it, all U.S. Coopers have the 13.2 gallon fuel tank. I could be wrong. I do not believe there has been a definitive post on this matter yet.

It may be. What do you base your view on?

I was told my the dealer. I asked when this had originally came up. But I do not trust a dealer's knowledge on this anymore than anyone else. Quite frankly, I am just going to wait and fill mine up when I get it. If it goes over 10 gallons, then I know for sure.

Well, I am getting an S, so it really isn't an issue for me. But, I am curious. Any other Cooperites out there that can confirm?

I think the concensus was that there are MCs that have the 13.2 gallon tank, and people have been told that by their service managers. Even with that tank you should be able to put a bit more fuel in than 13.2.

Mine is off, too. When I fill up with 12.8 gallons, for example, I still have 2 bars lit, as in a recent example. I plan to be at the pump whenever it reaches the 2 bar level--I don't feel like walking, and I don't trust all the talk about having an extra couple of gallons "hidden," as it were. I do plan to talk to the dealer about it--Tracker, let us know what your SA says.

One problem I've run into is that the dealers haven't had much experience with the '07s yet, so they may not have an answer.

According to my MA who's a MINI geek (my term), the MC's have 13.2 gallons in the US. He said, "MINI is vague about that topic". Why, I have no idea. But my car took 12 gallons while I still had 3 bars showing, so I tend to believe him aside from the fact that he's so knowledgeable about these cars. I posted this at the other thread about this same topic. Maybe they should be merged.

My MC had 3 bars and took 11 gallons. I'm hoping they have the larger tank.

Vague isn't the word I'd use, when the owners manual, in 2 places, states the MC has 10.6 and the MCS has a 13.2 gallon capacity. Wrong, maybe. But not vague.

Besides the two-bar thing, daffodil, have the bars ever turned red and has the warning ever come on in the dash?

It was my understanding that the MCS had the larger tank because it does not have the spare riding underneath the rear floor. Therefore they are able to make the tank larger.

However, I might be wrong. But it seems to make sense.

Lynn, yes, one time. I was at an autocross and the computer said 30 miles to meltdown. We blew off the last run each, and I made some nasty *comments* to the husband who wouldn't let me get 10 bucks worth of gas before we got there...(grumble, grumble)

I've decided that two bars mean pump time--right now! Texas is big. Lots to walk. Busy freeways. Etc.

The R53 MC also had the spare and the tank was 13.2 gallons. Based on my MA's comments and the fact that I've pumped over 12 gallons into my R56, I'd say the tank size is the same.

My Cooper was showing 1 light before the paperwork yesterday evening. MA went to fill it and put 13.1 gallons in it. More fuel to go farther sounds good to me.

Talked to the dealer yesterday and the Service Advisor wants me to bring it in and they will check to make sure it is calibrated correctly. The only problem that he said they have is with the fuel sendind unit on the 07.
