R56 Can a 2012 Cooper S with 150k be trustworthy
Can a 2012 Cooper S with 150k be trustworthy
Hi all. I preface my question by sharing that I have spent hours upon hours researching these cars and I fully realize they can be a gamble. That being said, here is the scenario:
Locally I have found a 2012 S owned by an adult (and a car guy) who has been using the car as a commuter. 3 owner, he has owned it 6 years, frequent oil changes with Mobil 1. No accidents. Recent clutch. Bone stock. Just shy of 150k miles. The car is essentially equipped precisely as I would want it: stick, no sunroof, sport package and I can stand the color. It comes across as owned by older folks as opposed to being beaten on or tuned. I got both the Autocheck and Carfax and both reflect same info showing many services some at MINI dealers but vague regarding what was actually done.
My interest in the car is for auto-x and track days. It will probably see 1,000-1,500 miles per year for those purposes. I have several other vehicles in the fleet so I have no need to rely on this car for daily transportation. I will also leave it stock with regard to power, turbo, etc and only plan to install suspension mods. The car is fast enough for my purposes (if I want to go faster I own a Corvette).
My inclination is to buy it and immediately install new factory timing components, a new water pump with metal pipe, metal overflow tank, new hoses.
All of that being shared, assuming the car is as described above, can this N18 be reasonably trusted to last another 30-50k miles? I have read so many R56 horror stories, but having owned nearly 200 cars in my life I also know the forums are filled with posts from those with problems rather than success stories.
I would appreciate input from those with R56 N18 cars with regard to how this car can serve my purposes. Thank you!

They can be reliable, as long as maintenance was religiously performed. My old R55 Clubman ran for over 200k miles for me. If that one has been taken care of, and is in good running shape, I would think it could get another 50k out of it.
My '06 R52S has very near that. Regular service by an extremely reliable independent shop makes a huge difference. My service increment/oil change is when the odometer shows 4 zeros or a 5 and 3 zeros...no guessing.
