I was taking the 17 year old PPF the original owner had put on the hood and bumper "by the dealer". It looked horrific. So I used a hairdryer, a plastic scraper, plastic razorblade and some Goof Off, followed by some mineral spirits for the remaining glue.
Took hours just do 1/3+ of the hood. The PPF was so old and UV damaged it just came off in pieces. This car has been stored outdoors its entire life.
I pulled on a few areas and the paint came up. Could it be because I was getting tied and maybe a little too aggressive...ya probably. I dont think the PPF adhesive is strong enough to pull paint.
The old stuff... chip 1 chip 2 chip 3 all 3 chips Bumper still has the 17 year old PPF on it
Although I HATE the term “you know, if it was my car”
and in most cases it’s not, but here goes.
If it was my car and assuming the primer is still in place, I would feather out the edges around the paint chips.
With 1500-2000 wet . Just to take down the edge around the chips.
I would use a 2k style paint. To me, 2k =one stage (base and clear/way easier for repair) paint in rattle can that has a popper on the bottom that releases the hardened.
scuff the clear (around the damage, not the entire car) with a medium scotch brite (scuff not sand)
again assuming primer is in place.
You’re going to do this because you’re going to feather it in, lots of light coats, a bit heavier where the chip is because you’re going to want to “float” out the depression. Back mask tape a larger area away from the chip.
you want to blend this in and not create a hard line.
so feather it in, allow 3-5 min between coats to flash.
allow the paint to dry (min 24 hours)
the paint will need to be polished.
there are lots of videos on this, for the area, I would use a 4” pad on a variable speed drill.
you may need 3 different grits of polish and 3 DIFFERENT pads
paint store will know exactly what you need for this part
slow speed, speed equals heat
heat will cause the pad to burn through the paint on the edge.
the edges are where everything goes wrong.
I hope some of this helps.
lots on this on YouTube
that’s where I learned most.
looking forward to seeing how you make out.
I know it will be great,
no matter what you do
1) it will be better than it was
2) even if you mess up, you can do it over.
it’s not like working with a forever medium like concrete.
One more thing
when you apply same colour paint over original, you can make it look perfect.
my car had lots of deep scratches and I was able to fill them in
sand
polish
you cant see them
lots of paint scratch videos.
based on your paint issues, this may be applicable to your requirements
The kit looks like what you need
Does the paint come with a hardener
some rattle cans for auto paint have a “popper” on the bottom to release hardener when your shaking the paint.
without it, you’ll be doing this over and over again.
That’s great news
I would probably select the buy now button
if you’ve never done this before, not a bad idea to get a cheap rattle can, any colour and practice on something just to get comfortable
I try to stay about 7” away from surface. Watch a few YouTube vids
The paint spec sheet will tell you flash time
share pics when your done.
if a bug or dust lands in the paint, leave it, when the paint hardens you should be able to wet sand and then polish it out. Don’t try to remove it with your hands while paint is wet
Finally got the kit. What's my order of operations, painting experts? Sand slightly to get the surrounding paint at the same elevation as the exposed primer?
I would start lightly with 1500 wet
try to use a small rubber sanding block for even distribution
wet and light to get a feel for it. You want to try to feather out the edge
Have you watched and YouTube videos test?
seeing is believing
and it’s not learned until it’s applied. If you yo go light and slow you’ll get the feel and will know how much pressure is required.
this doesn’t tell you a lot but it’s the best way to start
I forgot to mention clean the surface before and after sanding with a final wipe (better that wax and grease remover)
and wear gloves, the oil from your hands and ruin your project
