Dealer price way too high?

***Sorry..realized I put this in the wrong forum!

Hey all! Looking to get another Mini! We've had a 2014 S coupe and a 2020 S Coupe. Currently looking into a '13 JCW vert. Low miles and amazing condition for nearly $22k. We think they're a little high but it seems right in there for mileage and condition.

Would you touch one at that price? If not, what's a fair offer?

TIA!

Define "low miles". What market (city)?

The 2013 JCW should have the updated N18 engine in JCW tune so they fetch quite a bit more than the earlier N14 engined versions. I've noted that when a 2012 vs 2013 (last year) of the JCW hardtops come along - the 2013 is usually around $18-20k if the mileage isn't too high, about $6-8k more than a 2012.

Play with CarGurus value estimator to see the difference - manual transmissions also fetch a bit higher.

It's a curiosity why MINI waited 2 years to get an N18 into JCW tune. I've always wondered if the N14 put in the 2011-2012 JCWs, when the regular MCS had received N18s, were better than the notoriety the earlier engines achieved.

cheers

It sounds like you're already familiar with the 3rd gens, why do you want a 2nd gen? Personally I wouldn't spend 20k on any 2nd gen, but if you love it and it's low miles with all the 2nd gen problems taken care of then it could be a fine car. The difference between the s/jcw isn't worth double the price IMO (unless you live somewhere that you can't modify an S to be similar to a jcw, then maybe it's worth the 30hp?)

Fair has nothing to do with car prices...

What I have gathered over the years is while convertible models command high new prices that's only for the first buyer. Subsequent buyers just want a good reasonably priced car.

For the car you are considering use various car sites to get pricing for the car you are interested in. My SOP when negotiating to buy a used car is to if I want the car and this is after it passes a thorough used car check out to start at wholesale/trade in. That's about all the dealer has in the car.

You can always up your offer.

And keep in mind price is not fact only an opinion.

Hi All!

I appreciate all your comments. I didn't get notified that anyone replied so I'm just now seeing them.

So to answer a few questions...we had a manual Gen 2 S and we loved it..the only thing we missed was a bit more tech. So we traded it for an auto Gen 3 S. Both were great cars but the soul of the 2014 was so much more. We missed it immediately...and the manual.

We always said we when got another Cooper we were gonna spring for a JCW. We had both the others tuned but we like the looks of the JCW and there are some other upgrades.
We definitely looked into the N14 vs N18 engine and the issues that occur with each. We're very DIY, so anything that comes up, we're confident we can address.
This car is super clean, with low miles, good maintenance history, full ppf on the entire car, and has some nice upgrades. We came to an agreed upon price with the dealer.

I had already done research on pricing. Cargurus says there aren't enough comparables to even give a price estimate. But all other equivalent JCW verts with similar mileage were all.priced about the same. KBB says the median trade in value is roughly $600 less than the dealer asking price, which I got over $1k more off of that price. Interestingly, the vert booked out higher than an identically spec'd hardtop.

So overall, am I overpaying. Probably a little, but with spring coming, I don't think they'll budge anymore for a while. I think the Achilles heal for this car is that it's a manual (it's in Seattle).

So that's where we're at...heading up to see it Friday. I uploaded the options list.
