GPS tracker found, now what

I was putting the r56 interior back together and found a small black box hooked to a long ribbon cable. Looks like it drawing power from somewhere around the obd plug. Looked it up and it is a gps tracker. Just got this car for my granddaughter so I really don’t know about the history of the thing. Looks like it has 3 wires Hooke into the harness, green one is very long and may be an antenna? Black is hot and red is maybe ground? Don’t know for sure without tearing into the thing further. Anyone have any experience with this? I would like to remove it. Thanks!

That's creepy. Maybe ask whoever you bought it from what the deal is? Probably someone put it in so that if it was ever stolen they'd be able to quickly recover it.

I would just rip it out, since it serves no purpose to the functionality of the car

I read somewhere that some of these things are wired in and if removed the engine won’t start. After I get my plugs and coils I’ll see what happens.

First, disconnect the battery. Then, trace each of the wires coming out of the module and see where they go. If any wires are cut and diverted to the module, disconnect and splice the wires back together. Those modules can be installed by the "Buy Here, Pay Here" corner dealers to provide repossession insurance against dead-beat buyers. Seriously, I would want it off the car if I were you.
