Long story -- 10 years ago ran over object that bounced off truck ahead of me, ripped the oil pan open. Bought from ???? a short skid plate to protect the oil pan. About three months ago a buzzing sound started from beneath the car -- the sound mimicked the engine sound -- buzz louder and faster as revs increased, stopped when shifted, started again rising with RPM. Discovered the skid plate as bent and was rubbing against the oil pan, thus, engine vibrations were transmitted to the aluminum skid plate which buzzed like mad.
I ordered the Rennline skid plate for the R56 Mini. Installed it today. It was an experience. The installation is easy, straightforward, however, the instructions that came with the plate were not especially specific. After a call to tech support, and sending them some pics on my cell phone, I figured it out.
I prepared some LONG instructions based on my experience. Tolls required are: 5/8 socket with ratchet handle; a short 3/4 combination box end/open end wrench; 5/32 Allen wrench; six pack of your favorite brew; patience.
Attached are my instructions; a photo of the two long black bolts and associated hardware; photo of the rear of the skid plate and the bottom subframe hole through which the long black bolt goes.
I recently installed one too, and getting the nuts onto the long main bolts through the subframe are nearly impossible to do. I put 1/2”-13 rivnuts into the holes and used smaller bolts. Now I can do it in the field at the track if needed. The rivnuts are slightly small for the diameter but they’ve held up. Otherwise the skid-late itself is nice.
