R56 Help with my first purchase of a 2nd G Mini
Help with my first purchase of a 2nd G Mini
I'm new to this site and poked around a fair bit but it is hard to piece together a summary of what I need to know, so I hope you will bear with me as I lay out my considerations (and limitations):
1. I'm mostly looking at '13/'14 versions, My web search seems to point to them as having many of the persistent issues ironed out, without moving into the higher price points of the 3rd Generation (I'm trying to stay under $12k).
2. I'm not s worried about higher mileage in that I will be using it for local trips and probably not putting on more than 4,000 miles a year. Are there issues, though, about models with, let's say, 980k or more on them that I need to be aware of?
3. How can I tell if the later model 2G I'm looking for has the better (N16/18?) engine, or did that come with a particular year?
Overall, if I'm looking for something in the $10-12k price range, is the '13/'14 in the seet spot?
Thanks for any help.

I have a 2007 R56 S and love it...
That being said, the 2013 will have the N18 engine (no carbon build up on valves - not Direct Injection), should be better condition inside and out. Definitely go for the Turbo. Around 60-80K you'll be doing some preventative oil leak things like a new turbo line, oil filter housing, thermostat housing, maybe timing chain. Easy enough if your mechanically inclined. (or have friends lol).
There are deals out there. I'd say you can get a 2013 R56 S with 60-80K miles for 8-9K. $10-$12k it had better be pristine and <40k miles.
I'm sure others will chime in... I got my 07 R56 S excellent condition, 45K miles for $4,500. I did look for about 2 months until I found what I wanted. Of course I have about $3k in upgrades (parts - cause I do the work myself), But I shred just about every car on the road!!! Ha!
Good luck!

Thank you for such a spot-on reply. Very helpful. I think I'm zeroed in on finding a 2013 R56S. I'm reasopnably proficient at car work, having done a lot of mods on some 3-series BMW -- two E30s and an E46. Prices right now are higher than you noted, but that is the current surge in the used car market. As long as China does not invade Taiwan and throttle the chip market for new cars, used car prices should be softening soon.

Thanks for your help. You helped me narrow my search and know what to look for.
I just got a 2013 R56 S with only 60,000 miles on it for $10,750. CARFAX shows it had the cylinder head replaced and the manual transmission output shaft seal. I can do just about any engine work except for seals, so I was glad to see that one someone else's ticket. Overall condition is great; maintenance, including brakes, is right on cue. It is a light silver that just begs now for a British Racing Green stripe.
Thanks again.
