R56 Cooper newbie with some concerns
Cooper newbie with some concerns
Okay so I recently bought a 2005 R56 automatic and I’m totally new to CVTs. I need to know if there’s actually something wrong with my vehicle or if it’s my mind playing tricks on me.
The pedal is very very sensitive, which I assumed is probably normal. The car drives great up until right at 50mph, then the RPMs shoot up to nearly 4k and it seems harder to accelerate over 50. It’ll still speed up past 50mph but it seems to me like it’s working real hard to go 55mph. Also I noticed that after 50mph if I push the gas pedal down a bit further than normal it seems more like normal acceleration.
any ideas or advice is greatly appreciated.

Hey Lackjey92,
We'll need to verify exactly which model you have.... R56 was from 2007 - 2013. 2005 is Gen 1 so R52/3. Is it base or turbo?
In general, minis accelerate from 0-50 pretty quickly, 50+ not so much! That's when we mod.
Welcome,
Rick

sorry about that. It’s a 2005 non turbo hatch.
First generation MINi’s had issues with the CVT transmissions. Unfortunately, if you read reviews of these cars, it has always been recommended not to buy a CVT and to only buy a manual transmission.
