OBDII Adapter

Hi All
I purchased an adapter, and it will BT pair with my phone, but with several car apk's, will not connect to the ECU. (Torque actually tells me details in the Adapter Status).
This is a cheap eBay adapter, but I've used the same brand (?) with the same phone on another car. I don't have another vehicle handy right at the moment, but can anyone confirm if the MC is fussy with some adapters?

TIA

I want to say yes as I have an Amazon OBDII reader that works with my Bimmers and Silverado but not with my Mini. Torque Pro can't pick it up.
